Oakland Paramount
Oakland’s elegant Paramount Theater was originally constructed in 1931, designed by architect Timothy Pflueger. With its 80-plus feet high tile mosaic façade, it is considered to be the finest example of art deco architecture on the West Coast, and has been designated a California and US National Historic Landmark since its restoration in 1973.
Home to both the Oakland Ballet and the Oakland East Bay Symphony, it regularly plays host to jazz, rock and classical music as well as ballets, plays, stand-up comedy and re-runs of classical movies from Hollywood’s Golden Era.
If you’re lucky enough to be one of the 3,000-odd ticket holders and will be attending either, or both, of the shows here on 16 and 17 April, then we hope you will have a splendid time.
Naturally, I want to hear from you before the concert, so feel free to share your thoughts. Have you been to the Oakland Paramount before? If so, what’s it like? Is it easy to park? How did you find the acoustics, the seating, the view of the stage? Throw information at me, I love it.
Whilst you’re thinking of things to throw, why not tune in to Radio Wien tonight at 10PM local time for a two-hour David Gilmour and Pink Floyd special? You can, of course, listen online. Simply click the “Radio Wien” live im Internet link at the foot of the page, then click Radio Wien live hören on the second page.
Enjoy!
Hey features editor, you asked for it, you got it. When I asked how OAI is charting in the USA, you said “Hey, you’re in the US, you should tell me!” So I looked it up for you on Billboard.com.
OAI peaked at #6 the week it was released. It went down to #16 last week and it’s #38 now.
Beating David on the charts are Black-Eyed Peas (at #23), Eminem (at #19), Johnny Cash (at #10), Barry Manilow (at #4) and James Blunt (at #3). It’s a sad day.
David beats out Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey and Korn. That redeems us, somewhat.
I’m glad to see Island Jam released in the UK so that ebay doesn’t make money for some talentless creep who can buy here and sell to fans there.
One more thing. People have been weighing in on the fact that David is an atheist. I see nothing wrong with David caling it as he sees it. If we like his music, why does it matter to us what David’s religion is? Are some of us so insecure about our own views that we won’t rest until others agree with us?
The way I see it, David is working for things he believes in. Crisis and other charities are places where David places his faith. There are a lot of people who go to church and say “Jesus” whenever they can, but they don’t do anything to make this world a better place. David appears to agree with my philosophy, which is really very simple: “Don’t go to church, BE the church.” It means, don’t just preach, but do something to make the world as great as you can make it.
Dear feature ed, I hope I have not opened a can of worms here. I have total, unwavering respect for people of other faiths. I like to think that they will do the same for me.
[Thanks very much for that, Dan. I appreciate it. I also agree with you completely on the issue of religious tolerance, so if you have opened a can of worms, I'll help you catch them all... and we'll make a few people eat them, too. You'd swear that David had just revealed he's a member of some crazy sect! - Features Editor]

i’m with dan on this. david could come out and say he’s part of some stark-raving mad cult and i wouldn’t think any less of him. after all, that stark-raving mad cult might mean a lot to him and many others, so who am i to knock it? david seems to care more for the world and the world’s needy than many of these religious nutters. if these fickle people stopped wasting their energy telling everyone how self-righteous they are and used their energy in a positive way instead, maybe we’d see a real change. religion bugs me. good for you for being atheist, david. if people don’t like it, they can lump it. the more i learn about you as a person, the more i like and respect you.

[I've been slacking today. These late kick-offs are a pain, aren't they? - Features Editor]
well don;t slack again you frightened the life out of me i thought you were sick or crashed or something :-)
just before i went to the shower i checked the score on the liverpool match on yahoo sport . it was 1-0 i think i about 7 minutes if memory serves . i thought there was going to be a slaughtering of west brom . however you only scored the same amount as united did . pity we let bolton score first but at least we scored 2 goals and now we are only 7 points behind chelsea yes !
nickster you did’nt offend me in the least i was only making a joke myself . i hate when people over use the texting terms . i only shorten words after i sit her for ages trying to spell the long versions . it would be interesting to know about the things you mentioned to improve computer use for dyslexics . i will mail you .
if i might be so bold i just want to correct a paragraph in my last post as it did’nt make sense . it should have read : anyway 2-1 to united away at bolton . good game. my dad who watched the match on the small irish tv sports chanell setanta sports said united sliced bolton into bits ( due to a cloncker of a headache i followed the match online on yahoo sports ! ) i hope it makes more sense now . teach me not to proof read my postings !
i hate late kick offs . i have to make sure i am home in time form work at about 15-30 in order to have a shower then go and watch it as my family and i usually go out for a meal on a saturday and it is too late to wait until a late match is over to clean myself up :-) as i do my far away deliveries on a saturday it is not always that easy ! i am like my dad i love the football at 15-00 on a saturday . thats the traditional time when it should be played . sorry to sound like a table thumper . if i am out at work today fm has the football on i can listen to it in the car . i can also get bbc radio 5 but today fm is a dublin station so has better reception !
do my eyes decive me or is vicky another female manchester united fan ? excellent i am not alone :-)
janey did i read that david thumbs through the blog now and again . holy mother what must he make of us all :-) ( especailly me . i promise i am only a part time nut case :-) )
well enough of my ramblings for now . talk to you again soon fet ed . take care

[You're right on both counts, Linda. We do have two (female) United fans here. If anymore appear, I might have to ban you. We can't have more United fans here than Liverpool fans, can we? David,Dan,Victor,
John Lennon said it right didn’t he?
“Imagine no religion” (one less thing to fight about)
My wife and I are going to the Oakland show on the 16th!! After spending a lot of time debating spending the $ to go, the love of the music and the desire to hear it live won out! We have mid balcony seats in what looks like a no bad seat venue. Can’t wait
[I hope you both have a wonderful time, mate. - Features Editor]
Back in the day Babel fish clammed up on me so I had to resort to Marvin, who now translates for me full-time (when he’s not too depressed). He refuses to translate Dutch though. Haven’t figured out why.
And now that I’ve had a good think about it, the first concert I saw wasn’t Leon Russell, it was a package tour thing with Herman’s Hermits, Blues Magoos and THE WHO. Crazy. How could I forget that?? The Who played “Pictures of Lily” and “My Generation” and busted up their gear. My first live rock ‘n’ roll experience at the tender age of 12. Wow.
Ed/Edwina – what was the first concert you saw?

please don;t ban me fet ed i would end up suffering from blog post withdrawl symtoms :-) for the record i don;t mind arsenal so much . the last time they won the premier league my then fella was an arsenal fan .
i am having a look at our run in . it will be interesting to see how we do against arsenal . chelsea seem to be a bit either complacent or jittery . i can;t belive they only drew with birmingham today . i would have expected a slaughtering of birmingham there too . so we could stand a chance to take points from them on the last day . although stamford bridge is not an easy place to get points at .
john i think if there was no religion humans would still find things to fight about .poltics or land or oil or something like that , sadly thats the way we seem to be .

Agreed Linda..however,I believe Mr.Lennon’s “Imagine” covers all those other issues.Religion is just one less thing to bicker about.
Actually, now that I think about it, wouldn’t that song be perfect for David to cover.Seems to contain all the values that he believes in.On second thought, maybe not…just one of those treasures that should be left alone.
Hi, Features Poobah. If I haven’t said it lately: YOU ROCK!
Regarding the URL icon thing: I couldn’t see either! But then I realized it is on the homepage URL but not this, the Fan Fare, one.
And regarding atheism: a recent poll here in the US showed that atheists are viewed as America’s most distrusted minority. That plus the state of music in the US are enough to make a person take to the fainting couch with a glass of absinthe.
[It's a crazy world, isn't it? - Features Editor]
I am very excited to see this show, I will be driving from the state of Oregon and am expecting to have an excellent time. Most of my friends up here think Im crazy for driving 500 miles to see a show. OH WELL! I am adicted to listening to the Floyd and am not going to miss the show. I think the Echoes version from Pompeii might be the best song in the world next to Saucerfull of Secrets. And I say this because it sounds so cool. There are some special underlying things behind the scenes. These songs, really make a long drugout day into a peacfull trickling meadow in mid spring. I can’t wait to see what the band is gonna throw out on the platter.
Justin Kreutzman said “YES! a gig close to home. All my life I’ve lived in the Bay Area yet have never gone to the Paramount. I think it’s long overdue that I check it out and what better reason than David’s show. I’ll see if any of the Grateful Dead guys want to go too!”

Justin,
I thought your old man played there all the time. Didn’t the Dead play there through the ’70′s as well as at the Greek?

My problem with set religions: EACH DENOMINATION/CHURCH/SECT/ THINKS THEY ARE THE ONLY RIGHT ONE…. AND ALL THE OTHERS ARE WRONG….AND YOU WONDER WHY WE HAVE WARS AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS
Hello??? People??? What causes wars and dissentions are the noisy few from each group! And you all sound like you have the pointy sticks ready to go… just the like the witch hunts of old. The religion I follow says to care for widows and orphans. It says to love your neighbor as yourself. It says in humility to consider others better than yourself. It says God wants mercy, not sacrifice. It says do not judge others. It says if a man takes your cloak, give him your coat too. It says if you have something against your neighbor to go to him and make it right before the sun goes down. Maybe if people practiced such things the world would be a better place. Don’t judge God based on the people who CLAIM to believe in him! My religion is not meant to control people, but to free them. Sure, there are people who abuse religion. Does that mean it isn’t real or that it doesn’t do good??? No! That just means humans (all of us) fail to be perfect. Oh, and my religion also says anyone who claims to be perfect deceives themselves.
Think about it…

Regarding where OAI is on the charts in the US, who cares!?
I think David knows in his heart how great his music is, and all of us know how good it is. If he really cared that much about the charts he would go back and do something w/ PF.
As an American, I feel I can say that the state of this country is a “little” off at this point anyways. Now who’s opening a can of worms?

becky’s point is so sad . just shows you what a hold the religious right seem to have on american lives right now . though it can depoend on who was asked . if you were asking a group of anerican liberals you might get a different answer then if you were asking someone linving in the bible belt .
people should be free to belive in a god or not as they so wish . it is when we start separating ourselves into little groups and thinking that group is worse then we are as they don;t belive in god , do belive in god or belive in god a different way then we do that trouble starts . ( i hope i have’nt repeated nance’s point which i 100% agree with )
as to the music industy don’t get me started . the only good thing in the charts at the moment is on an island . i like musucians like david and bands like marillion who carefully craft there music to make it meaningful and the best it can be not some mass produced pop pap that you won;t remember 5 minutes after you hear it .
keep up the good work david . in this world of computerised musical crap we need people like you to show us how good music can be .
would there be room on the sofa and a glass of absinthe for me too becky :-)

From Ian: PS That “remember me” button doesnt work for me here as it keep forgetting who I am, do you know FED???
The same thing happens to me. Every time I post it tells me that first time posts have to be aproved, it’ll be added later. It never remembers I’ve posted before. I was going to ask about it but Ian beat me to it. Just an FYI….
In response to Warren asking about the lengths to which fans are prepared to go to catch their ‘heroes’. On the forthcoming 26th of May, I will be travelling down the M62 (or East Lancs Road, depending on roadworks) from the ‘Pool of Life’ Liverpool to the dark, satanic mills of mancunia to catch DG and da boyzz
Whilst this may only constitute around 30 miles each way, believe me it’s like travelling to another planet (and a not particularly welcoming one at that!)

All the ‘remember me’ button does is make sure your name and emailadress are already filled in in the right boxes the next time you post. If it is not working for you, you may have your ‘cookies’ turned off (look under ‘options’ in your browser)
The fact that you keep getting the ‘first time posts need to get approved’ message probably just means that at some point Fed decided it was better to check ALL posts before they get into the board instead of just your first.. am I right Fed?

I will be Comfortably numb before, during and after the show. I think its called
Let’s roll another one…..or is it candy in a current bun?
Both will work I guess.
I am traveling from Florida to see the show. I have never seen Mr. Gilmour live and am looking forward to it.
I am a big Floyd Japanese LP collector and along with bootlegs. I can’t wait to be mesmerized.
Too bad he is not going to do a cover of “while my guitar gently weeps”, because this will be one of the last times he is in the states.
See you on the 16th Mr. Gilmour. Just for me, could you announce echoes as, “Looking through the knotholes of granny’s wooden leg”?
For thoes of you that don’t know, thats what echoes used to be called.

[If you go back and read the entries for the European shows, you'll find a setlist for each. - Features Editor]
religion has nothing to do with God and the personal relationship individuals want(or don’t want)to have with Him. There is nothing more crashingly boring than a bunch of American ass kissers who use words like ‘indeed’ and phrases like ‘across the pond’. Thank God for the Valley Forge boys who got us safely away from kings and queens and titles and the right accents. The one thing more useless than religion is a monarchy. Let the royal family prove themselves in a reality tv show in a semi-detached somewhere. And let David Gilmour write the music.
[That could be interesting... - Features Editor]
David an athiest?
Oh well, there goes my hopes of seeing the guitar god rise from a mock cave onstage to the notes of Castellorizon, Easter Sunday in Oakland…
To each his own…rock on David and Co.
Well tepid,
“The one thing more useless than religion is a monarchy. Let the royal family prove themselves in a reality tv show in a semi-detached somewhere. And let David Gilmour write the music.”
Our monarchy is interesting (at least partially for me) and the Floyd have already written music for them. Just yesterday I saw footage from a german braodcast in the 70′s and during the organ part you suddenly see the church marriage ceremony of our queen and her (now late) husband. Caught me by surprise ;-)
Now back to the gigs and our daily Rudders-Bianca-Clemens-FEd remarks …

The Paramount is a grand venue.
I must be honest though, the surrounding area is less than desirable, especially after dark. Best bet is to park at the adjacent lot and go right to the theatre and back to the car post concert.
If others are coming to the show from outside the area and want to see some sites in Oakland, look into Jack London Square at the other end of town. Much nicer place to stroll and enjoy on the water.
Don’t want to frighten my fellow fans, just laying it out there as it is!
mm
I’m pumped. My wife just surprised me with tickets to the show in Oakland. I’m in New Orleans and lost my house to Katrina. I can’t think of a better getaway from this hell than to see this show.
It is grate what you are doing, but please come to Latin America, many of us fans can’t afford to fly all the way to the status, lots of people that never saw you live, but worship your music
David you are a very expressive guitarist, possibly the most in Classic Rck, as well as vocalist and writer. I never tire of your style and it is there on you recent CD. I read a recent article in a magazine. I think, MOJO, I am 50 now and forget for sure, but I was struck with the comment that you said about Mortality and how it is frightening. I have been there also but I just want to encourage you. I have found peace in my heart and I know that you can also. Prayer and an unpopular answer: a relationship with Jesus. He Love us and forgives us if we only ask and I know that I have needed that. Knock and the door shall be opened. Knock until it is unless you have already!
[Er, David is actually an atheist, Sam. - Features Editor]
David thank you for coming to Oakland, Ca. I was lucky enough to see you with Pink Floyd there in 1987 and in 1994. I grew up about 20 miles from Oakland, and now live about 3 hours north in Chico, Ca. I feel so blessed to have gotten an e-mail that got me in on the pre-sale. I have never seen a show at The Paramount Theater, and I can’t think of a better artist to start with. You are one of my favorite musicians of all time, and I got into your music as a teenager, and still enjoy it today as a 43 year old. I really enjoy the new album, and treasure all the music you have made in the past. See you Monday in Oakland, congratulations on your beautiful family, you are a great man, love Bruce Weber!
My honey and I are traveling almost 600 miles to see Gilmour for our first “babymoon”. Our unborn child is going to be so blessed to hear the beautiful, melodic music from the womb. Hopefully my water doesn’t break during the show! We are so excited to hear the new, and the old. We listen to Floyd all the time. If you see us, don’t forget to rub my belly and wish us good luck. Any hints on baby names? Don’t know yet if boy or girl. Greatly appreciated! ENJOY THE SHOW EVERYONE!!!
['Dylan' is good. You can't beat 'David', though. 'Victoria' if it's a girl? Could shorten to 'Vicky'. - Features Editor]
Does anyone know if there’s an opening act for these shows, and what time David will hit the stage? I’m planning to be there at 8, but if he’s not coming on until 9 or 9:30, I’d rather be elsewhere — depending on who’s opening the show.
Thanks for any assistance…
[There's no support. What time does it say on your ticket? - Features Editor]
I’m eagerly awaiting Sunday and Monday’s shows in Oakland. I had the great fortune of catching the ’94 Division Bell Tour. There were so many times I wondered if I would ever be lucky enough to see David Gilmour perform live again. I’m so happy the answer turned out to be yes!
I wonder if there’s any chance of hearing the Shakespeare Sonnet 18 from the David Gilmour Live DVD during these live performances. Probably an unusual request, but I am moved by the simplistic yet powerful arrangement and beautiful filming of the video. Just wondering. I know I will enjoy the shows no matter what is played.
Thank you, Mr. Gilmour, for continuing to make music and also for making a positive difference in the world. You are an inspiration to many.
Cheers,
Mark
9:10 PM I’m a block away from the Paramount, up high but only in elevation, 14 th floor of a skyskraper writing a damn report on Sunday night, yet for a spell I’m looking down at all you bast*#ds who aren’t writing reports and who are wealthy enough to afford the rock show tickets. Piss off all ready! Did they play Embryo or Point Me At The Sky?

Just got back from the first night at The Paramount in Oakland. I am grinning from ear to ear. Never thought I would see Wot’s . . .Uh The Deal and Echoes in the same show! It blew my mind right sideways it did.
Here’s the setlist to the best of my memory:
1st Set:
Breathe>
Time>
Breathe Reprise
OAI (entire album, I think one song was out of order)
2nd Set:
Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pts 1-4?)
Wot’s . . .Uh The Deal
Dominoes
Coming Back To Life
High Hopes
Echoes
Encores:
Wish You Were Here
Comfortably Numb
I’m also going tomorrow and will provide a longer review. I saw Dave at the Greek Theater in Berkeley in 1984 and though that was a great show. . .Dave’s charisma was absolutely shining tonight. I couldn’t have hoped for a better performance from everyone.
The acoustics (and audio reproduction system)were the best I’ve heard of the fifteen or so times I’ve been in the Paramount. The light show was also fantastic.
If I could maybe have one small modicum of a wish, it would be that Dave actually plays one song from either of his first two solo albums, oh, and Fearless, I’d like to hear Fearless.
