GuestMap

blog1515.jpg

As you may have noticed, we have a new addition to the Stuff & Nonsense page, which we hope you’ll like.

You can now leave a message for David and show everyone where in the world you are at the same time (and whether you are male, female or a little green alien, if you wish).

We look forward to hearing what you think of it and, of course, to reading your messages.

Do include your blog name so that we can all recognise you.

Sorry to have to say it, but please don’t bother trying to plug your website or tribute band, nor to make any of the usual requests, because such messages will be deleted straight away.

As is the case here, messages left will not appear instantly. Instead they will be held, subject to approval, before being published. So please, be warned, and thanked in advance for your co-operation.

It goes without saying that, if we see a pin in a certain part of the world, we’ll take it that you’d like to see David perform there.

If in doubt as to what you have to do to leave your pin and message, please find a quick summary of all the buttons that run along the top of the map itself.

POST allows you to mark your location on the map and leave a message.
LIST shows all the entries that have already been left in standard guestbook-style.
ZOOM enlarges the map, so that you can put your pin in the right place.
ICONS allows you to choose whether you see dots, or icons, on the map.
CONTRAST lightens the map, so that it’s easier to view (apparently).

Last, but certainly not least, we’d like to thank you all for the messages you left for David on his birthday. They were much appreciated.

Wow! What a cool idea! This will be great for organising the previously mentioned meet ups.

Perhaps we can get one rolling in the UK as well as the ones in the US?

David, after I gave you such a wonderful gift, you still won’t believe in me? You are lucky I am so forgiving. Now play that Comfortably Numb solo again.

  3. Cemet Nosce

Thats awsome, I pinned up my little man.

I also love these photos of David where he owns the spotlight, often seen during the second comfortably numb solo and during learn to fly. It gives my goosebumps goosebumps. :)

What a cool idea. The people involved with this site are so creative, you never cease to amaze me.

Fed, when I posted my icon on the guest map, I noticed you guys were in the chatroom. (you silly bloke Fed, what are you doing up that late?)

Anyway, I tried coming in, but it wouldn’t accept my password. It’s the password that was sent to me. I’ve gotten in before with it, but now I don’t remember if I was given the option of changing it, and whether I did or not.

It’s not to big a deal, since most of the chat times are when I’m at work, but am just curious. I made sure I was case sensitive. Oh well, maybe next time.

[Occasionally, if I'm in a good mood, we have a 'lock in', of sorts. A completely random room password is put in place for the benefit of 'locking in' those who arrived before closing time, so that they can continue chatting for a while if they wish and also be able to return to the chat should they accidentally log themselves out. Simply, you need to arrive before closing time for this password to be revealed to you. Sorry for the disappointment. - Features Editor]

    Hello FEd,

How has your week been? I do hope lovely.

I think the map is a great idea. I have already posted my info.

It’s the beginning of spring break, Saturday. Boy, do I need it. My brain is fried.

    Have a great weekend.

Well Fed What will you do next? This is getting better all the time. David Gilmour’s web site has to be the best.

    Morning gang,

    Neat guestmap. Info submitted.

    Have a nice weekend,

Yet another great idea for a site that needs no improvement. What other goodies will we get this year?

I hope your week has been a good one, Fed. It seems you did not get that much sleep.

Great win by the ‘Pool on Tuesday. Have a good weekend.

That is technically and visually a very good photo. I take it, it is one of Polly’s?

I tried to think of some captions but on this occassion they just seemed a bit trite.

    Good idea about the map.

Love the guest map and thanks for making it available. I guess now all you earthlings will know I’m out of this world (though not quite a little green man).

  15. Paul Greer

    Hi David Hi Polly!

Polly, you’re a photographer after my own heart and I’m really impressed by your work – what equipment do you use?

Also, David – any chance of some nice inspirational spring pictures from Astoria and environs to cheer us up here in the cold frozen north (Gothenburg, Sweden)?

    Best wishes, Paul

What a good idea the map is, although when it came to adding a comment i was not sure what to add so i just put my location, maybe i can edit that later if that is possible? if & when i think of something witty to say.

We went & looked at the venue for our wedding reception last night, David & Polly are still welcome to come along if they wish. Its getting close now (cup final day) & no distractions now a certain team in red wont be playing… i think Mr Wenger took a bung (bribe) from my intended mind you.

  17. Dom

I love the guest map. I’ve left a little Union Jack in Paris.

On a unrelated subject, here’s something amusing that one of my lecturers said. We were in theatre and comparing Shakespeare and Marivaux and how you don’t get any shoes in Marivaux, it’s a “Shoeless Drama” which he then went on describe as sounding like a David Gilmour album. So David, there’s your next album title…

    Hope everyone’s fine and dandy,
    Dom

Oh so you are an alien, FEd. That explains the fake beard.

And now I also understand why you do not want your identity to be revealed.

love the new map idea. i had to do it twice. forgot to tell you where i live

so fed how are u and well done to the pool for beating the european champions. im looking forward to an all english final wat do u think?

also love the new style of chat room it looks awesome. things never stand still on this site. thats one of the reasons i like it, the fact that its regularly updated not like some others that stay the same for months

well all the best to you and all the irregulars out there

  20. Nate

    Hi FEd,

    A little suggestion.

I notice the map pops up in it’s own little trim window without all the buttons and crud that normally surround a new browser window. Any chance this could be done for the chat page?

This is something I do manually myself when preparing for a chat (how sad does that sound?) and I have often thought of making my own little link to achieve the same in one step but have not got round to it.

Other users may find it handy too?

    Have a good weekend!

[Thanks for your suggestion, Nate. - Features Editor]

That is a great idea. I’ve often wondered just how many nations are represented here. Now there will be a map! Thanks for that.

The map will fill up fast. What would someone do if the place they live is already marked? Can a mark be placed on top of another?

[Yes, you can do that. It's also easier to see the map if you switch from icons to pins/dots. Use the third button from the right to toggle between the two. - Features Editor]

    Hi FEd,

Am in the business of creating new things, be it films and documentaries and also finding out the next new trend.

Now, I have entered the new site and saw the map, I cannot get to find how I would position myself on the map, what is the trick to place my location on the map and leave a message….

    Please would you advise me?

    emmanuel

[You want the first button: Post. Click that and a pop-up appears asking you to "Click a location on the map to add your entry". Press the 'OK' button beneath, then point to your part of the world and left-click your mouse. A little green flag will be set and a form for you to complete with your name and comment will appear beside it. You can add your country's flag and a boy/girl/alien icon of your own choosing, too. Please note that your message will appear as soon as I've approved it, as is the case here with blog posts. - Features Editor]

  24. emmanuel

On second thoughts and having played for a while i find it easy to move and could be quite fun to get to know who is where, and if you have friends around the world then you would be able to find out where and how far from one another they are, I see the point and that could be great to meet and share fun dinners and so forth…

    Great move FEd

This guest map is a very nice idea indeed, and interesting to watch. Unfortunately, the map also indirectly confirms the fact that the famous “global village” isn’t so global at all in terms of access to computers and the internet; nearly the whole of Africa and great parts of South America and Asia have no possibility to join. Globalization is really something primarily for the rich ones on this planet.

Since we are thinking globally here with our new Guest Map, may I bring up my pleasure at seeing more mainstream media coverage on the health of our global ecosystem.

I won’t promote any particular news site, but, as I sit here procrastinating on work I should be doing, I did a search on such topics in the news.

[You just have to give me time to add it. It is Saturday. - Features Editor]

Oh, I posted it Friday lunchtime and I saw that others managed it. I’m not complaining, I just thought maybe something was wrong.

I tried again from home yesterday.

Enjoy the rest of you weekend.

    Regards.

    Julie

[Only your second attempt made it, I'm afraid. Thanks for leaving a message. - Features Editor]

Marvellous little feature, I’ve had great fun looking at everybody’s little icons and such.

    Bye for now!

A quick note to anyone who has said that they are unable to place their pin on their chosen part of the map.

Icons are set as standard, but you can replace the mad flurry of aliens and garden gnomes with coloured pins simply by pressing the ‘Dots’ button.

If that doesn’t adequately clear your chosen area, press the fourth button that runs along the top of the map a few times to zoom in. Although the resolution’s not great, you’ll be able to hone in on your part of the world and put your pin where you really want to.

You can drag the map with your mouse or use the W, A, S and D buttons on your keyboard to scroll to different parts of the world.

Many thanks to everyone who has left a message. It’s good to see so many familiar names, yet also strangely satisfying to note that many of you aren’t from this planet, after all.

That map burgeoning with little aliens and earthlings is so cute. Hey, Mike, where is New Jersey anyway?

*only kidding – I knew it was in America*

    Help !

Is that an alien’s transcription, or a ‘gobbledeegook’ (don’t know that word, but I love how it sounds) ?

On the GuestMap, my message ends with “ un de ces jours!” … Do you read what I read ?, or is it only me ? Please, perhaps you could change “à” into “A” ?

But I want to tell you: I have great fun with your GuestMap ! Bravo !

    Michèle

[Oui, d'accord. Excusez-moi et merci pour la compliment. 'Gobbledeegook' (le charabia, non?) n'est pas aussi bon de 'pamplemousse', naturellement, mais c'est bon que vous l'aimez le bruit de la mot. - Features Editor]

    Dear dear dear FEd,

I saw on the wonderful map (I love it! So funny!) that there is a Jon in Iceland.

Hey! I love Iceland! Jon, I want to become your friend! Do you want you become a friend of mine? Pleeeeease!!! I can send you packs of italian food every week, if you accept to become my friend.

Your Country is fantastic! I went there in 2000 and it remains in my heart.

    Greetings from Italy!

    L!

    Nice addition but

FED, what are you doing in Aberystwyth? You’re way off. Get down south where you belong.

[I think you'll find that it's more Newcastle Emlyn, but good to see you paying attention to your geography. Mrs Thomas will be proud. – Features Editor]

I just posted my message on the guestmap. Hope it works. The guestmap is an excellent idea and a great tool to know our whereabouts, thank you. My husband and I are excited to know that there are a numbers of fans from Florida who visit this site. I read about Rudders from Toronto is in Florida this week?! Hope you have a good time, Rudders.

This is an unusual picture of David with his arm extended. If I am not mistaken, David habitually tends to have his face down when jamming with his guitar; he usually is very composed and concentrating on his work; and if he is singing, he likes to look straight towards the audience. Polly did an excellent job capturing such an unique pose of David.

Thanks for providing us the gallery of pictures Polly, and by the way, thanks for a clip of the home video you provided in “DAVID GILMOUR IN CONCERT”.
