Best UK and US songs
As you mentioned those contentious lists of Best American and/or British Songs recently, as voted by radio listeners or magazine readers, I wondered what you’d choose.
20 songs by UK acts and 20 from the USA, if you can, please. The more variety, the better, so do overlook the various members of Pink Floyd, if you so wish.
On this day in 1970, ‘Tears of a Clown’ by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles topped the US singles chart. It would also reach top spot in the UK.
And on this day in 1963, The Beatles had one of many UK Number Ones with ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’.
Would you include either of these fine tunes?
If you haven’t noticed, there are some new articles in the archives – like the one pictured. Click to have a read.
That’s all for this week, enjoy the weekend.

That is an extremely attractive photograph of David and I mean that in the most hetero way possible…
FEd,
Will you be compiling the lists into a master list providing us with a top 100 list? Or do you want to see how things go first?
Thanks.
Andrew

This is not going to be easy!
Fed, some great new articles in the press section. I must admit I do not often visit that part of the web site, the blog being my first port of call, but today my lunch hour was spent catching up.
Thank you again.
[My pleasure, Graham. - FEd]
I have always thought that a real rock version of “Tears Of a Clown” would be awesome, same goes with “Mama Told Me Not To Come” by 3 Dog Night…
I could never accurately choose just 20 songs from UK and U.S. acts and deem them as “best”.
Hello Fed!
Thank you for this interesting article in the “Guitar Player“!
Have a nice weekend! Have a nice 3. Sunday in Advent!
With best wishes from Berlin
Ina
Without spending too long thinking about them, limiting myself to just one song per artist, probably forgetting at least a dozen equally-great tracks in the process and deliberately excluding everything by David and Pink Floyd, here’s my UK (and Ireland) list:

Hey FED, I’m leaving for home (I’m at university if you’ll remember) for Christmas holiday for the next three weeks. This means I won’t have steady access to the internet and this cool blog you run (I’ll still manage to poke around sporadically though). So with that in mind I would like to wish you, the staff, David, Polly and the family, and everyone else here on the blog Merry Christmas and/or happy holidays or for others still a very nice solstice break.
Oh and by the way… I’m such an audiophile that a list such as this is impossible for me, man it would take several weeks, colored markers, and graphs for me to figure this one out…..that sounds familiar…anyway good luck to anyone who feels confidant enough to produce such a list.
Chat with ya in 2009.
Thank you very much indeed, good night to you.
[Cheers, Josh. Have a great Christmas. See you in the New Year. - FEd]

[The same to you. Joni Mitchell's actually Canadian, but perhaps you were considering North America as a whole. (We really should do a separate list of songs by Canadian artists when you consider Leonard Cohen and Neil Young, to give two other prominent examples.) - FEd]
Excluding Pink Floyd – as well as The Beatles – would make it a little easier for me, as they would certainly dominate my top 20! How about a future top 20 list of Floyd & solo Floyd member songs?
I’ll start with the U.S., in no particular order…
Stevie Wonder – Superstition
Beach Boys – God Only Knows
Creedence – Long as I Can See the Light
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On
Johnny Cash – San Quentin
Booker T & the MGs – Hang ‘Em High

Have a great weekend!
Bill C
[Many of those also feature in my list, Bill. You obviously have great taste. - FEd]
Here’s my non-Floyd/Gilmour top 20 UK. I do not apologize for being partial! I’m a Floydian, a Gilmourader, a BEATle and a Stone.
In no particular order:
Beatles: Let It Be; Hey Jude; Strawberry Fields; Come Together, With a Little Help from my Friends; Norwegian Wood
G. Harrison: All Those Years Ago; Got my Mind Set on You
R. Starr: It Don’t Come Easy; You’re Sixteen
P. McCartney: Ebony and Ivory; Band on the Run
J. Lennon: Imagine; Mind Games
Rolling Stones: You Can’t Always Get What You Want; Get Off My Cloud; Beast of Burden; Angie; Tumbling Dice; It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll
There are so many that should be in the top twenty that there doesn’t seem like enough room to put the top UK songs. I could easily put a top 100 together, FEd!
Thanks, FEd, for the voting!
[I'm sure I could compile a list of 100 songs, too. It would probably be easier, don't you think? - FEd]
[Joni Mitchell's actually Canadian. - FEd]
I was referencing “Laurel Canyon Joni” with that one.
I just adore that entire record but the title track holds a special place in my heart for a lost friend.
The Canadian artists idea is brilliant, let’s do it!
Leonard! Neil! Jann Arden! The Guess Who!
['American Woman' is a great track (continuing with our Austin Powers theme, there). And don't forget Bachman-Turner-Overdrive's 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet', which is another classic. I don't think I could come up with a list of 20 different Canadian acts, though. Sorry, Canada. (Weren't Steppenwolf from Canada? If so, 'Magic Carpet Ride' takes us back to Austin Powers...) - FEd]
This is a really tall order you’re asking Fed.
There is so much class material out there, where would one start!
When my brother and I went to see David and the lads at Manchester, and watching and listening to David and Rick play Echoes, I can honestly say when I think back to that peace of art being played I still choke up. What with the beauty of that track and skill I would have to put Echoes up in the hall of fame, and knowing we will never hear it played live again makes that track more monumental.
May sound a bit OTT to some people but I really don’t care.
Damian
[Weren't Steppenwolf Canadian? - FEd]
Initially, they came from Canada, but found their fame in L.A. (as did Joni Mitchell). John Kay, Steppenwolf’s lead vocalist, emigrated with his mother from East Germany, though. Would they still count as a USA artist?
Cheers;
Bill C
[Tricky. We had a similar discussion about CSN in the chatroom the other day: American or British? We decided American, although they'd have sounded very different without Graham Nash. - FEd]
['Magic Carpet Ride' takes us back to Austin Powers... - FEd]
Oh Behave!
Click my name.
[Oh, there you are. (You have to imagine the turn and pointing finger.) - FEd]
Could I suggest that those who think this cannot be done just write down the first 20 that come into their heads? The result will be just as interesting I’m sure.
I’m going for sing-a-long (ish) UK of course.

Stranglers – Golden Brown
Peter Gabriel – Mercy Street
* mid-life crisis, saw them last week, still haven’t recovered
** saw them last week too, good but not a patch on The Stereophonics
[Stereophonics over Coldplay for me, too. I'll add 'Traffic' and 'Is Yesterday Tomorrow Today' to your choices. I can't believe I left out 'My Sweet Lord'... and what a great shout 'Golden Brown' is (although now I think of Gordon Brown whenever I hear it, so it's not quite the same). - FEd]
Well, for Canadian artists don’t forget Alanis Morrisette and Shania Twain as well as Rush.
Thanks.

[Oh, that's original. - FEd]

I have an extremely difficult time with these lists. I love reading them, but can’t seem to get my head cleared enough to compile a list of my own.
Does anyone have any Ritalin?
I’m trying.
Another seemingly “easy” question to answer, but when you get the pen and paper out, the question suddenly becomes so much more difficult! So far, I’ve only attempted a UK list, but had I allowed Pink Floyd to have 10 songs and Led Zeppelin to have the other 10, this would have been much easier!
Locomotive Breath (Jethro Tull)
Nights In White Satin (The Moody Blues)
Rock On (David Essex)
Bang A Gong (T. Rex)
Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin)
Sultans Of Swing (Dire Straits)
Dead Flowers (The Rolling Stones)

I stayed away from anything Floyd related and tried to make the list versatile but it wasn´t easy – sorry for some artists appearing more than one times.
It´s all in alphabetical order.
Alan Parsons Project: Some Other Time
Animals: House of the Rising Sun
The Beatles: Yesterday
Black Sabbath: Children of the Sea
Kate Bush: Wuthering Heights
Coldplay: Violet Hill

Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
Uriah Heep: Lady in Black
Yardbirds: For Your Love
[Very nice, Irene. It was hard for me to leave out 'Yesterday'. What a song that is. - FEd]
Thank you all very much for your lists – keep them coming.
They won’t appear here until Tuesday, as I’m taking the day off tomorrow, so don’t be worried.
Back Tuesday… with a chat from 12:00 (UK), if you can make it.
And here is my list for the USA:
Chuck Berry: Johnny B. Goode
Blondie: Heart of Glass
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Bad Moon Rising
Dream Theater: Peruvian Skies
The Doors: Riders on the Storm
Bob Dylan: All Slong the Watchtower
The Eagles: Hotel California

The Monkees: Daydream Believer
Elvis Presley: Jailhouse Rock
Queensryche: Revolution Calling
Queensryche: Silent Lucidity
Ike and Tina Turner: River Deep, Mountain High
This list was much harder than the first one. I never noticed before that I hear so much more often music from the UK. And there are some songs I love dearly but which are from neither one of these countries…so maybe…could we…pleeeaaase!
[Seeing as you asked so nicely, let's see what you've got and from where we all got it. Is that the first time anyone's included Blondie? They put out some brilliant tunes. I liked that first-single-released-in-about-a-decade from the mid-Nineties, too ('Maria'). 'Peruvian Skies' is lovely, and if 'Long Road Out of Eden' doesn't win four Grammys... Good stuff again, Irene. Thanks. - FEd]

Hell FEd,
Sorry if this is the incorrect place to ask — but can we all look forward to seeing David on the Grammy Awards show in February performing his nominated song?
Last night I saw the first TV ad for the Grammys and it made me wonder if David would make an appearance.
Thanks, from ice-coated Maine. We’re just recovering from the worst ice storm in New England history; days without power.
Cheers,
Lola

Good choices everyone!
Peace!
Gabrielle
[Maybe we could all list another 20 in the New Year and see what we come up with. - FEd]
[Maybe we could all list another 20 in the New Year and see what we come up with. - FEd]
I think for the New Year it would be cool to have a list of 20 for artists from all other parts of the world excluding the U.S. and U.K. Although some have cheated a bit already by including Canada and Ireland.
What do you think?
Thanks.
Andrew
[Definitely. - FEd]
[In fact, I don't think I've seen this Elvis on anyone's lists. - Andrew]
I got “shipbuilding” into mine, old boy.
Kicking myself over conspicuous absence of Green Day, Metallica, etc.
Good thing you don’t ask difficult questions, FEd.

I’m practically bleeding internally over the ones I had to leave off the list. I love you, Smokey Robinson and I’m sorry.
[I love 'Sugar Pie Honey Bunch'. In fact, it saved my Monday, because I was about to lose my temper with the next idiot shopper to stop me dead in my tracks (by being a dawdling, dithering, directionless dim-wit with more bags than they could carry sensibly) when, lo and behold, what was that I heard faintly coming from Gilesport? Three minutes spent feigning interest in basketballs later, I could calmly make my way back to the (badly signposted) Park and Ride without the need for breathing exercises, a police escort or gin. - FEd]
[Kicking myself over conspicuous absence of Green Day, Metallica, etc. - Tim]
Don’t fret, we’ve all probably missed a few here and there. In this world of iPods where we have the ability to have over 10,000 songs at our fingertips we are quite spoiled. It certainly isn’t like the old days where you sat by the radio waiting for your favorite song to be played. And when you finally heard it, your day just got so much more special.
Now I find pleasure in finding songs from years ago that don’t get played on the radio anymore. For example, remember Lou Gramm of Foreigner and his solo hit – Midnight Blue? Back then it was played a lot, today you don’t hear. But it is kinda fun to put that track back on and think back.
And actually how generous of FEd to request 20 songs each from the US and UK instead of just saying list your top 5 songs.
Thanks.
Andrew
Further to my last post:
In fact growing up I can tell you that my record collection consisted of:
Pink Floyd – DSOTM
Eagles – Hotel California
Steve Miller – Book of Dreams
Led Zeppelin – IV
The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour
Black Sabbath – Master of Reality (by the way I never had the jacket for this one, just found it in a thrift store for 45 cents)
Kiss – Destroyer & Rock and Roll Over
That was pretty much it for a long time aside from a handful of 45s such as Chubby Checker’s The Twist and Boris Pickett’s Monster Mash and a bunch of other ones I can’t remember now.
Sure I wanted more but I really appreciated what I had plus it was fun listening to the radio under the covers when you were suppose to be sleeping. Or sneaking into your big brother’s room to listen to some of his stuff.
Now it is millions of songs at your fingertips and people still get upset when one song is not included on a new release.
Thanks.
Andrew
[So true, Andrew. That's one hell of a collection. I'd take that over several hundred others any day of the week. (No, I won't list them, but I'm thinking Abba. Maybe next year.) - FEd]
[Seeing as you asked so nicely, let's see what you've got and from where we all got it. - FEd]
Most of my choices (beside the UK and USA ones) would come from continental Europe but a little bit from the rest of the world, too. So I would love doing a “best of the rest of the world” list.
I´m hoping, too that the Eagles will win one or another Grammy (and hoping even more that David will win!). Is it only me or are the Grammy nominations this time really more interesting than usually?
I have finally heard the radio show where David played Syd´s “Here I go”. Beautiful song. Rather untypical for David but he was sounding absolutely great. Loving it!
Irene
[We'll save that for the New Year, and maybe do another 20 from the UK and US, if anyone wants to add to their lists. - FEd]

I will and do dance in shops if the overhead music is good unless the aisles are crowded. In this life you dance when you can.
I hate shopping.
