I think an influential group has to be 'The Band'. Hard to name their most influential number (trying to resist the temptation to list 'The Weight' as my favourite song) but they set a great example for future generations of songwriters. Definite inspiration to me to keep up my singing and guitar work!

Sorry to be late...

All of my choices are pre-Beatles, because once you get to them, there might be hundreds:

Bill Haley & the Comets : Rock Around the Clock
Buddy Holly : That'll Be the Day
Elvis : Blue Suede Shoes
The Platters : Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Little Richard : Tutti Fruti
Jerry Lee Lewis : Great Balls of Fire
Roy Orbison : Pretty Woman
The Ventures : Telstar
Del Shannon : Runaway
Ricky Nelson : Hello Mary Lou
Chuck Berry : Maybellene
Fats Domino : Blueberry Hill
Gene Vincent : Be Bop a Lula
