The Wall

Yes, it’s tonight.

David will be joining Roger Waters for ‘Comfortably Numb’ at London’s O2 shortly this evening. I’d love to hear of and from anyone with a golden ticket, or from anyone who has a ticket for upcoming Wall shows, or from anyone who has used tickets from earlier Wall shows, for that matter. Heck, if you’ve ever had a ticket for anything, do join in.

If you don’t fall into the above categories, as thoroughly depressing as that is, don’t feel left out. Please feel free to spill forth anything remotely Wall-related. Favourite tracks and lyrics would be an ideal starting point.

And if your mind is stuck on songs from 1963, as is mine after the previous post (in spite of the rather witty, I thought, playlist I’ve been tweeting about this past hour), I’d still like to remember those which I may have missed.

You should expect to see some nice photos of tonight’s performance, by the way, as Polly is there, armed with a camera. You may have heard that the shows are being recorded for a future DVD release, although I obviously couldn’t tell you about any such plans, as I don’t know them, so please don’t ask. All I can say is that tonight’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ is being recorded, so that it may be posted on various websites, but is not intended to make it to DVD.

Look on the bright side: that means you’ll get to see it sooner.

I should also remind you that tonight is most definitely a one-off; David is not repeating his special guest performance at a later occasion, I’m sorry to disappoint those of you with fingers crossed and tickets for later shows.

So, The Wall

Hey! Isn’t Mel out in London now? If so, she scored big! I’m very excited for all those who are able to be there, its going to be wonderful!

I’m expecting some excellent Polly shots. :)

    • KenF

Happy Birthday for the 21st Angelo, hope you had a good one. I celebrated your big day by watching Roger performing The Wall in Manchester. ;)

  2. Kathy

Saw the show October 15th in Hartford. Everything was perfect! So happy that my 17 yo daughter and 15 yo son were able to enjoy it with us.

Congrats to those with the “Golden Ticket”.

  3. Tomasz

    Fantastic news. Good luck.

Yes, I used a ticket for Golden Circle for the first night in Łódź show of The Wall, back in April, and I was really impressed. Really big production, great sound, only David missing.

I hoped that David slightly extend his arrangement with Roger to play one full The Wall show, but nevermind.

Well, that was the show most likely from the beginning, even more after Nick Mason announced to visit this show.

    Somewhat sad it’s not a non-London show.

Anyway, go for it! Have fun!

  5. Connor Boyle

I know he said that he wouldn’t but I’d love to see them do “Run Like Hell”. :)

  6. lorraine

    On a school night. :o

I’m guessing that Simon (who tweeted he was on his way to London to see the show earlier on today) is a very happy bunny right now.

Really looking forward to seeing Polly’s photos too.

Lorraine and I are psychic. We said ages ago it would be the Thursday. Remember Lorraine? We should’ve put money on it :))

This is terrible being jumpy and waiting for the reviews to come in, and the YouTubes. Watching through fingers of hands over eyes.

I just knew it! … what with a sparkling mandolin from all that elbow grease, promises of “I do, but if I told you, I’d have to kill you” followed by a playlist of the most blatant hints ever and tweets of seeing a black Strat on stage (you know that feeling when you want something so badly but can’t have it!).

I’m sooooooooo jealous (in the nicest possible way) :v and for those of you blessed with the good fortune to have witnessed it (have I already mentioned how JEALOUS I am?), I am waiting with baited breath to learn of your experience and how amazing it must’ve been and do tell what it’s like to die and go to heaven. My mind is definitely not stuck on 1963 … no way, no how! Am scouring all of cyberspace for any tidbit of news and info … perhaps a pic … although I know there’ll be some wonderful shots from “spitting distance”.

    I did say that I was jealous, didn’t I? :))

  8. Cristian from Chile

    Very Nice!!!

From the distance to the lucky people who have a ticket for today.

    I’m waiting for Polly’s photos too. :D

  9. IMcK

I know exactly where I’d like to be right now!! Still, I was lucky enough to see the Pink Floyd The Wall shows in London back in 1980 and 81 and also Roger’s production of The Wall here in Ottawa last year (which was great, though I did miss David’s voice and guitar).

Here’s hoping David’s performance makes it onto DVD as an extra, unlike Nick’s performance at the RAH on David’s tour. :(

  10. ash

Jealous as hell :( and I too am looking forward to photos and any film footage.

    Knock ‘em dead David!

  11. Phil

I went to the September 20th show in Chicago, and while I really was hoping that David would be at that one, it was still the best concert I’ve ever been to, hands down.

Can’t wait to see the videos of this one. I’m sure it’ll be all over the net in a couple of hours.

  12. Floydian Theo

:( Damn, I’ve bought a ticket for the May 18 show. flying from Holland to the O2 Arena, hoping David is playing. All the lucky ones have fun tonight, the May 18 show is for me not that special anymore! But I knew, the change to see David play Comfortably Numb was 1 to 118. LOL.

    Shine on, Theo

  13. @mattthetax

Saw the show at Madison Square Garden and at the O2 last night. It has changed and is very powerful stuff!

  14. Echoes71

Well congrats to the lucky few w/ a ticket for the show tonight! I saw The Wall – Live three times in 2010. The 30 October show in Kansas City, and the 7 and 8 December shows in San Jose, CA. The show is amazing and is certainly one that must be seen live… In The Flesh… and more than once.

The technology today has caught up to Roger’s vision and the show… for those of you who haven’t seen it yet… will blow you away.

    Have fun tonight, Dave!

    • Brian

Caught the KC show also – a very nice production.

Musically, I enjoyed David at RAH in 2006 more than the Wall show, but again, the wall was an excellent production.

  15. Beppo the Mime

I have used tickets from the first show of this tour, Toronto as well as the Buffalo, NY show. I have to say it is a very exciting place to be (O2 arena) with Mssrs Gilmour AND Mason to both be in attendance for tonight’s shows. Hmmmmm, is Dave going to be hoisted uptop the Wall again? And if Nick does happen to play a few songs, how would we know? He’d be hidden by the Wall… that confounded Wall! Hahaha.

Best of luck to the patrons of the arena tonight, as well as to David for what many fans have waited what seems a lifetime for. No pressure, Dave, and while you’re at it have a welly of a wail on that Strat of yours!

  16. Lene

Wow… so tonight’s show was the one to attend… :)

The Wall-show was performed in Copenhagen last week and got extremely good reviews, especially for sound quality.

I’m going to the show in exactly 1 month – June 13th – and hope it’ll be a nice evening for the whole family.

Perhaps some of the golden-ticket-holders will fill us in on how it went tonight?

  17. @mattthetax

P.S. There is always a ‘black’ Strat on stage as Snowy uses one every show (I was very excited in New York to see it on stage).

    • @mattthetax

Agreed! When I saw it at MSG I thought my prayers had been answered but it turned out that Snowy must have a copy. Still an amazing show.

I am taking my son on 27 June for his 16th birthday.

  18. ivi

    DAAAAAMN. :/

We got tickets for 15th. 8|

Can’t wait tho… it’ll be perfect enough! (Not sure if I would even handle seeing David. :D )

  19. Donna McHenry

Not the news I wanted to hear! I was so hoping David Gilmour was going to join Roger on Tuesday 17th May when I am going to see the concert. Quite miffed now :o

Saw the concert in California last December and it was fantastic though and I shall enjoy it again next week too. Lucky buggers who went tonight!

    Donna

  20. simonemery

at last, the voice and guitar of pink floyd is back (even just for one song), whoever is there tonight can look forward to a quality quality voice. not saying Roger can’t sing, sorry that’s exactly what i’m saying. lyrically brilliant but a singer he wasn’t, and most certainly isn’t now. he can rant but he can’t sing.

long live the gilmour, show ‘em how its done Mr Gilmour.

  21. Michèle

    Go, David, steal the show!

No, I’m joking… Go, David, enjoy yourself!

Very happy for all those in attendance tonight, I’m sure they will have a wonderful time and will forever ‘remember that night’. :)

My favourite song from The Wall (besides ‘Comfortably Numb’) is ‘Mother’.

    • Michael Kelly

On this tour Roger has been singing along with himself to Mother, so to speak, in that he has a video of him singing his parts back in 1981 projected on the wall while he sings live. I know he only promised to play CN, but if he had been willing to do more, I think it would have been so cool had David popped in and sung HIS parts in the same fashion (with no previous introduction that he’d be there of course).

  22. Lorenzo

    Hi,

    thanks for the exciting infos.

By the way, wouldn’t you remind to Mr. Gilmour that Paris is also a very beautiful city, and that if by any chance he’s there on May 30, maybe he could spend a couple of hours in Bercy, you know, we would love C. Numb with the right vocalists. ;)

    Shine on.

  23. Comfortablyjon

Twitter just went nuts — it happened — I am waiting for the YouTube videos to be uploaded now. I haven’t been this giddy since I saw the show here in Phoenix back in November. Wow.

  24. Ernest

    Great news!

    Wish I was there…

I am sure it will be a great performance.

    Looking forward to Polly’s pictures.

  25. Lee Harris

Was a fantastic moment. The atmosphere was electric as everyone realised who was atop the wall.

After the wall came down Roger introduced DG and they hugged each other. After this Roger said that “By strange coincidence someone else from the remnants of our old band is here” and Nick came out with a tambourine. They were joined by the rest of the band and played “Outside The Wall”.

Fantastic show. Amazing to go with my Dad 30 years after I saw it with him last!

  26. damian cunningham

I know I’ve said before, I was there – The Wall Earls Court 80/81 – and I know it’s naughty but I have the show on DVD, got it at a car boot.

Great to hear David, Rog and Nick have resolved with EMI and some unheard tracks will be with us soon.

  27. Davie110

Words can’t describe how I feel at the moment… Mainly due to a combination of a slight case of man-flu and too much singing, which has rendered my voice non-existent!

It was incredible to see, and I feel very, very privileged… Of all the shows, it was tonight! I feel so lucky.

Can’t wait for the official footage to come out, so fellow fans of Mr. Gilmour can see it too.

Also, I would like to give a special thanks to FEd, for his brilliant (and funny) playlist on Twitter leading up to the show. It raised my excitement levels, added atmosphere, and also passed some time as I spent a good while explaining the concept of Twitter to my Dad.

When David came out, the place went nuts; my Dad had tears in his eyes, and he wasn’t the only one. And Nick coming on stage at the end was the icing on the cake.

All I can say is thanks – to Roger, David, Nick, Polly (great photo on Twitter, looking forward to more) and FEd, for making it a truly special day.

Can’t wait to see other people’s reactions!! :)

    • Davie110

      Thanks FEd! :)

I have to admit, I never thought in a million years that it’d be the show I went to that David made his appearance.

It was fantastic just to see David playing live again, and to hear the massive cheer from the crowd – it has been too many years since I last saw the famous Black Strat! It meant the world to me to be there, and I will never forget it.

I hope he enjoyed himself as much as we all did, and I really hope it’s not as long before we see him again…

I’m off to listen to On An Island and The Wall on my long journey back up to sunny Scotland, and I know for sure that I’ll “Remember that night…” :D

  28. Penny

    Hi FEd!!!

How are you? How has your week been?

I went to Houston, in November, with a friend that I have know for 35/36 years.

It was wonderful. And, as I stated back in November, Roger did some “jousting” with his ego, during the show. ;)

All in all, a good time was had by all!

I am jealous though, of the lucky ones at tonight’s performance. :P

    XOXO
    Penny

  29. Olly

Thank god I got tickets for this evening’s gig!

By now you will also be hearing the fact that Nick Mason also joined waters and Gilmour on stage for the final song and encore! What a great show and thank god I lived to see this!

  30. Alan

Was there ever any doubt it would be one of the London gigs? ;)

Cheers to everyone who was lucky enough to attend! And thanks to David for being so cool to do this!

    Alan

  31. ed johnston

David Gilmour is a huge inspiration for my playing. In fact, I wrote a song named “Likvidator (The Warning)” that is mainly influenced by the way he plays.

  32. KenF

I’m sure that Polly’s Pics will also be a lot more revealing. Looking forward to seeing them in all their glory.

As for Wall tickets, I have four for 21/05/11 in Manchester (why couldn’t you wait until then David). I’ve also got a couple of stubs stashed away somewhere from the ’80 and ’81 shows at Earls Court.

Congratulations to Simon J for having a ‘Golden’ one. Happy Days indeed (or perhaps it’ll now be Happy Nights.) :D

  33. Sam Green

    Best Concert EVER!

12/05/2011 is a night I’ll never forget! To see David Gilmour stood at the top of the wall, belting out the Comfortably Numb solo was a moment to die for!

    TRUE LEGEND!!!

  34. ziv keidar

Been there tonight and I as many others were truly surprised at the moment Roger pointed his fingers towards a character on the wall which pretty soon turned out to be David – thank you very much for this rare treat. :)

  35. Sean

I was there and it was amazing. We didn’t know it would be tonight until David Gilmour started to perform his part in Comfortably Numb from on top of the wall and the place went wild. It was extremely emotional. Such a wonderful and fantastic surprise.

Nick Mason and David Gilmour both joined the band at the end for Outside the Wall (Nick on tambourine, David on mandolin).

I feel so lucky to have been there tonight, but if you are going to another show, it’s still a fantastic and emotional concert production. You’re in for a treat every night. I’ve just bought a ticket to go again, and I know David Gilmour’s not playing twice. :D

  36. Thomas R

    I had a golden ticket!

I’ll post more tomorrow but for now all I can say is ‘wow’ and thank you David.

I need some sleep – so it can sink in and because I have work tomorrow. As Lorraine said, all this on a school night!

  37. Jimmy Junkster

I was at the O2 tonight. The only night of the tour I had tickets for and I struck lucky. CN was brilliant – plus a bonus with David playing the mandolin on Outside the Wall.

Great to see David with Roger and Nick on stage at the end of the show.

There is some footage on you-know-where right now.

    • FEd

Indeed it is. You can all find it, I’m sure, so I won’t be providing any links.

The official recording will be available later today, hopefully.

  38. KeeQue

What I would have given to have been there tonight. Saw the show in Houston, TX and prayed, although entirely too optimistically, that po-dunk Texas would be the date. Still, I carry the melodies and voice deep in my soul so Dave’s voice and notes were there with me as I hoped in vain.

Would love to see Dave tour again in the USA hopefully with stops in TEXAS. LOVED On An Island and I own Gdansk and Remember that Night DVD and Blu Ray.

GIVE US MORE, DAVE! We miss you!!!

  39. Julie S

I was one of the lucky ones with a ticket for tonight’s show – although obviously when I got it, I didn’t know it was the night to go.

Great show – David you were fantastic, no one plays it like you. It was great to see you all on stage together.

All in all I had a wonderful time and feel privileged to be there.

    Jules

  40. Dominic

    What a fabulous evening!

The show was great anyway; but as Comfortably Numb drew close, those who had been keeping an eye on Twitter surged to the front. And when Gilmour’s head appeared, the place went bonkers.

The solo of course was superb.

And then to end, Nick joined them on stage.

The atmosphere was like a huge party.

  41. snow

Probably my biggest regret in life so far is not going to see PF when they were last in Australia. My sister and girl friend (now wife) went, but I had my nose out of joint with the venue, what a fool. :(

I’ve seen a YouTube clip of yesterday performance, you’ve got to love the crowd singing, even if the crowds singing wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

1963 was the year at least one fool was born.

Well, down to the local for few pints and chat about the reissues coming out. Fingers crossed for the vinyl, OK not really, PF are the KINGS of vinyl so I feel confident they will be around soon.

    • Alessandra

Probably my biggest regret in life so far is not going to see PF when they were last in Australia. My sister and girl friend (now wife) went, but I had my nose out of joint with the venue, what a fool. :(

      Snow,

I perfectly understand you, because I made the same mistake when they played in my city, in 1989.

I was young enough and I didn’t know their music, yet. A colleague of my father, who was going to the concert with his family, had an extra ticket and asked me if I wanted to go, but I said no because I didn’t know him very well and, at that time, this made me feel uncomfortable.

What a silly reason. I can’t even think about it. :(

  42. jack

8| I’m just a follower. It’s nice that the Floyd is enjoyed by me and millions of others like me.

    J.B.

  43. Danny

It’s already been uploaded to You Tube twice, but they didn’t get it from the beginning. Outside the Wall’s also up but is too far back to make faces out.

  44. frank par

Should be a great show last night.

I saw the original Wall show in 1980 I believe at the Nassau Coliseum in N.Y. I’ll never forget David atop the 35ft. wall, just a wailing his black Strat. Still have the program from that evening.

It would have been nice if he also did Run Like Hell, oh well!

  45. Kristopher Junner

Very jealous of anyone who got to go.

I nearly bought tickets last night but just couldn’t afford them or get the time off work.

Ah well, I’ll always treasure the memories of seeing David live in Glasgow and at the Royal Albert Hall in 2006. Greatest musical experience of my life.

    Kris

  46. whitbywoof

Oh well, not much point in being jealous – I couldn’t afford tickets anyway, with or without DG. LOL, I missed David Bowie at DG’s RAH concert by one night so I’m a living underdog anyway!

But … The Live 8 reunion was so exciting that anything else since – without Mr Richard Wright – just isn’t the same.

Loved the Twitter hints though: all that mandolin polishing and Nick’s comment: “…but looking forward to seeing the old boy creaking around on stage”. Hmmm – which one was he referring to?!

  47. tim_c

    D’oh!

My Golden ticket for Saturday night just turned out to be fool’s gold … F’ed, what are you playing at, I said Saturday, remember? You’re making me think that David does not bend to your will after all. :P

Seriously, good luck to anyone who saw it and of course I booked the ticket before David pledged his performance so I’m cool with it. I never thought I’d get the chance to see “The Wall” show in it’s full (and it seems improved) form and I’m sure the surrogate band will do a good job.

One of my favourite parts form the “Is There Anybody Out There?” recording is Roger’s “clap-a-long” audience participation slot … I really wonder how many people “got” that back in 1980-1.

Musical highlights of course are old Comfy, the funkier versions of ABITW (II) and the less jolly “One of My Turns” whose lyrics are right up there, but of course it’s the whole package, concept, narrative, vision that make this a seminal show in Rock Music.

  48. Simon Long

I was one of the lucky ones… still can’t quite believe it.

The Wall show is epic anyway, but to see DG appear on top of the wall was incredible. It took a few seconds for people to realise that it was indeed him, but the cheer at that point threatened to take the roof off. Everyone around me, myself included, was on their feet open-mouthed.

It goes without saying that he played and sang it perfectly – we didn’t get the extended solo from the 94 tour, but it was utterly superb. Nick Mason coming on with DG and RW for Outside The Wall was the icing on the cake.

As I said, I still can’t quite believe my luck. Floyd at EC in 94 was my best gig of all time up until last night – there’s a new number 1 now!

  49. Damien

I banked on the 14th May show and paid over the odds for the tickets… deflated indeed but happy for the lucky ones who saw the spectacle!

When I heard this news the feeling was like being dumped by a girlfriend. I am gutted I won’t get to see them all together, I don’t think this will happen again, it really was a one off, and I can’t see another reunion happening. To those of you who witnessed I hope you enjoyed and will tell the tale for years to come I know I would have done! Floyd history has another great tale to its collection.

I live in the hope that one day I’ll get to see my hero play – David please get back on the road!

  50. Adrian King

It was fantastic to see him appear above the wall, black Strat in hand, and with that familiar, rather portly noble posture.

We all went absolutely mad at the sight. Not a single person remained seated at the sight. Everybody was singing along, and the atmosphere was incredible. The sound of David and Roger singing; everybody in the audience singing along, cheering and waving, was a sight to behold.

Last time I saw him play was at Earls Court on the evening they filmed the video P.U.L.S.E.

At the end, Nick Mason joined on stage to sing ‘Outside the Wall’ with the rest of the Wall band and David.

It was a moment to savour. Roger said that 29 years ago (and 328 days) they last played Comfortably Numb in the original show at Earls Court. Roger said that at the time, he was a ‘Rather grumpy person disaffected by Rock and Roll, to which David would attest’. Gilmour stood nodding. Lots of people were laughing in the audience at the statement. A big bear hug between Roger and David got everybody cheering.

One by one, Roger introduced all the band members, and they walked off stage to leave Nick, Roger and David. I couldn’t help thinking of Richard.

    Time heals all wounds!

    A fitting end.

    Thank you!

  51. Taki

Lucky guys, them who had tickets and the time to attend the show…

I’m sure they enjoyed it, but hey, we’ll get to see it as video. :))

    Best regards

    Taki

  52. purple haze

hey, i have an idea. why doesn’t david gilmour repeat this in the show of 8th july in athens?? and never mind the costs of staying in athens, i’ll pay!!! :P :D

  53. Dave Underhill

Why on earth did David choose to appear on a Thursday night – only Londoners and folk that can afford not to work can get to London on a Thursday night. :(

Hopefully, the bug caught and he’ll show Saturday as well. :) Well, you gotta dream, haven’t you!

    • Paul

Er… No!!!! I live in Coventry and was back for 2 in the morning and at work in Birmingham for 8.30!!! 5 and a half hours sleep just to see Roger was worth it – David and Nick were certainly an added bonus!

If you want to see someone/something enough, then there are no limitations…

  54. Pottsy

I play in a band in Glasgow and we normally practice on a Friday night. 3 of the guys in my band were going to Wall show this week and I am going with my mates on the last London show (next week). When I text the guys in my band last night to check if we were practising tonight I got no text back. Then I remembered that they were going to show this week at some point! I sent over another text asking “when you guys seeing the Wall?” The response I got was “right now!”

Half an hour later they were all texting me “we’ve just seen Dave Gilmour!!” Then “Nick Mason too! What a night!” I thought they were winding me up until reading this today…

Gutted, but glad my mates saw it!!

Just hoping now Dave comes back on for final London night!!!

  55. Alessandra

    So, the mystery is solved!

I’m happy for those lucky people who had the right ticket and, of course, I’m also sincerely jealous. :P

As I wrote some posts ago, completely off topic :v , I used my ticket in Milan, Mediolanum Forum, on 4 April.

The show was great and everything was almost perfect. I only didn’t like very much Dave Kilminster’s guitar on some songs (Comfortably Numb, first), but I know there is a reason for that. Probably, I didn’t like him because I particularly missed David’s sound on those songs.

In fact, taking for granted that David’s voice and guitar can’t be replaced, I think everything worked perfectly to communicate the intended feeling and message.

    • Michael Kelly

I honestly don’t think Roger could have done better in selecting talents to replace David’s spots. I thought they did a wonderful job. However it’s telling that he needed a singer (Wyckoff), two full time lead guitarists (Kilminster and White), plus Jon Carin (who we all know David taught everything he knows ;) ) part time to replace one David Gilmour. And that’s not even counting G.E. Smith (even Gilmour couldn’t play all the guitar parts by himself live).

  56. courtney

following all of the tweets and pictures and videos has made for quite an emotional evening. what a thrill to be able to experience it second hand almost in real time. the miracles of technology!

i saw the the wall three times here in california and it is without a doubt the greatest show on earth. i wrote a short piece on it, here.

  57. James

I was at one of the shows in Lodz (Poland) in April and was lucky enough to be there again last night. Both shows were amazing, but obviously nothing is comparable to David being in attendance. The whole crowd went absolutely insane last night when they saw it was David atop the wall. Brilliant.

Surely it will be included as an extra section on any future DVD release, especially with Nick on stage too??

  58. Peter

I was lucky enough to attend last night’s performance of The Wall. It was a fantastic show which was crowned by the appearance of DG at his majestic best. I hope this appearance will be included in the DVD.

The reception DG received was tremendous, raising the roof and was similar to that which Rick Wright received at one of David’s Festival Hall concerts.

It was a real privilege to see them performing the piece as part of a show as neither David or Roger can truly reproduce each others parts in Comfortably Numb by using substitute artists.

Hopefully this won’t be the end of future collaborations between them.

  59. Amedeo

I’m was so excited to see David perform, as well as Nick being there. It’s just wonderful to see them together when it happens.

I was in Toronto for the first show of the tour on Sept.15th, and also Sept.16th. Then a few weeks later I caught the show in Buffalo on Oct.8th. I can’t explain the feeling I felt, especially the first night, other than to say if people felt like that every day, they would probably live to be 200 years old.

Although the entire band did an excellent job, I do remember missing David. I’m so glad he did this.

Thank you David. You’re the best!

It was my birthday, what better present than to be at a moment in rock history. A truly fantastic experience.

Thanks David, you made my year.

BTW, it was a brilliant piece of staging and performance. I worked on the show in Berlin in 1990 and was worried that this would be a disappointment, but not at all.

By the way, if you read this Sparky (Mark Risk), HI!!

    • Pavlov

Happy (belated) Birthday Tim — boy, talk about getting the best ever b’day gift, you lucky skunk!

  61. Colin

    :D

I was lucky to be at the show last night and, along with everyone else, was thrilled to see David pop up with his Strat at the top of the wall.

Awesome performance and very emotional to see. So glad you could make it!!

    Thanks.

    Hi Fed

I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS DAVID PERFORMANCE WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN A FUTURE WATERS DVD…

DO YOU KNOW WHY SUCH A DISAPPOINTING DECISION WAS TAKEN?

  63. Nick Jackson

Well, I was a lucky one! That was absolutely awesome and a dream come true.

Thank you David for doing this! Hope to see you guys doing more things together in the future.

    Thank you!

  64. Heather

THANK YOU DAVID! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

David’s vocals were divine, David’s playing was fantastic as ever and from the 2nd row from the front David’s smile still buckles knee caps at 50 paces!

He seemed so relaxed and really enjoying it. I hope especially at the end with the mandolin… for one moment we thought he might relieve Roger of the trumpet and start playing that. I’m still pinching myself especially with Nick there as well with a tambourine that looked like Michael Schumacher’s steering wheel. A lovely touch right at the end with just the 3 left on stage and Roger saying ‘and its goodnight from us’ and all 3 left equally… yes, it should have been 4 and we haven’t forgotten Rick.

Thank you David for making it a very special evening.

    Best Wishes
    Heather

    • FEd

Good to hear that another of our Irregulars caught it. Thanks for that, Heather. Glad that you enjoyed yourself.

  65. Geoff Duffy ( Dublin )

I’d be willing to share Hitler’s trouser predicament to have been there last night.

    Brilliant job David.

  66. Lpooldarlin77

Manchester MEN, next Friday… any chance of gracing us with your presence???? I think I would pee my pants if you did. :)

  67. Katie

I went the Wednesday night and thought it was sooo mind blowing! Can’t believe the amazing news about last night though! So wish I had been there. I have yet to break the news to my boyfriend though, he will be devastated, we originally had tickets for Thursday but he couldn’t get the time off work so we swapped them with his friends… he will not be a happy bunny!

  68. Rob_P_From_CT

Awesome – just watched some unofficial YouTube videos and it looked like one hell of an event!!! Can’t wait to see/hear the official release…

I saw The Wall in Hartford, CT on October 15th (the day after my b-day and that was my present to myself :P ) just like Kathy and it was really an unbelievable show. The graphics, etc were incredible – I had center floor seats so I was in perfect view of the entire stage and wall.

I have to admit it was one hell of a stage set-up and performance. Of course, without David it was lacking that extra oomph that we all know to be Pink Floyd… very nice to see AND hear David rocking it out with Roger even if it was just a one off.

It’s moments like this that make it all that much more special. I wasn’t there, but a big THANK YOU to David just the same. Great to see you on a stage once again!!!

  69. Joe Girouard

To see the way Roger and David embraced last night brings a tear to a grown man’s eye. Today is the day that so many Pink Floyd Fans have been waiting for.

    Long Live the FLOYD.

  70. Julian from Langley, UK

    Woohhaah! Wooohhooo! Yeeeaaaahhhhhh! Wheeeeheeeee!

It is some 16 hours later and I am still up there. Yaaaarreeehhhhaaa!

I was fortunate enough to go to one of the shows in 1980 and it was great then. With the advances in technology and some different things Roger had done, last nights show was equally spectacular and awe inspiring.

Unfortunately, we were parked in the top row to the left of the stage and a moon shaped stack of PAs blocked our view of the lone guitarist on top of the wall. However it was obvious who the lone ranger on the wall was, because the house erupted when the spot light turned onto the lonesome figure. David’s guitar could only just be heard above the din but did it ever make the hairs on the back of my neck tingle, and I am afraid there was a stinging in my eyes, dear Fed! It must have been a bit of dust, don’t you know.

It was made all the more sweeter as Roger very humbly thanked David for joining him on “Comfortably Numb” and to give him credit, whilst David was playing Roger pointed up the wall towards DG on a number of occasions, recognising who was playing the guitar solo. And of course when Mr Mason came on the evening was almost complete.

It was a great night and I was very lucky to have the ticket for that night, and I hope one Mr Richard Wright was looking down with a grin on his face. I certainly joined him!

  71. David Doan

Saw some video of this last night on Hidden Track’s music site… amazing… would have loved to be there.

Do us all a favor and do one final tour together! Stateside and worldwide for all to enjoy… anywhere remotely close to Atlanta, I’ll be there…

  72. Piero

Thursday, 12th May 2011 will be printed on the books of music history.

When, on April the 4th, I attended The Wall show in Milan, I was dreaming David to appear on the top of the wall, and I’m sure, all the crowd did it that night.
I’m happy for all the people who could witness those deep, meaningful and thrilling eight minutes yesterday!

Great, great news in the last days from David, Roger and Nick, by the way.

“Why Pink Floyd…?” is supposed to be fantastic. What do you think FEd?

Of course my thoughts go with Syd and Richard as well. It’s an important moment for Pink Floyd history.

    Have a nice weekend everybody!

    • FEd

“Why Pink Floyd…?” is supposed to be fantastic. What do you think FEd?

Fantastic, I’m sure. More on that soon, perhaps.

  73. kyrre simonsen

Why can’t people like David and Roger, who both are musical geniuses and both love to play, just play a few concerts together and record the concerts for Bluray? It means so much for millions of people.

But anyway please include this CN song on the DVD. Please.

It was amazing to see the clip, David playing the solo, so fantastic. Please let me know the setting for guitar and effects. :) I was buying the black Start from fender last year, and if I had those settings I get a step closer to get my guitar sounding like David’s. :)

I was at the the Wall concert in Oslo, 30 April.

  74. Martin

Haven’t posted on here before, so be nice to me folks. ;)

Went to last night’s gig, and thanks to mobile internet, we knew at the interval what we were going to be getting during the second half, but I really don’t think we could quite believe it until we saw it. I was asking my friend “Are you SURE it says David’s coming tonight?”

The moment that the spotlight turned onto the top of The Wall, and the chorus struck up, there was a giant gasp and a roar from the crowd as if they couldn’t believe what they were seeing – it was quite obvious most were not expecting it. Roger pointed upwards like a preacher to the sky, and leapt around like an excited schoolboy throughout the chorus and the solos. The standing ovation and cheer at the end of the song was quite emotional and I’m told many people were in tears at it all. Then when we got Nick on stage at the end, that was just so beautiful – a real pity we couldn’t have Rick as well. Roger sounded really sincerely emotional about the moment and truly grateful to David, admitting that he’d been a miserable sod to him in the past, but saying that he was happier than he’d ever been in his life – he sounded like he meant it.

A wonderful night and show – we’re going again next Tuesday – and although Tuesday will never top last night’s moment, I’m sure it will be well worth another view of a top top show.

A warm welcome to the Blog. We hope you’ll return and that you’ll come to like it here.

  75. Rudders in Toronto

    Finally…

I wasn’t at the O2 last night but did see the opening night in Toronto, third night in Toronto and a night in Buffalo.

Most certainly the best show I have ever seen. As someone said already, technology has finally caught up. To see every brick as a High Def Television and to see the Wall opening and moving around was pant wettingly good.

I hesitate to mention it but I thought DG was a tad nervous on the first solo but who wouldn’t be when one of the greatest Rock and Roll moments was re-created. I know that Kilminster looked and acted physically relieved after he finished his solos…

The hug between RW and DG at the finale looked honest and emotional.

    Roll on the DVD. :)

  76. Lisa

Hi FEd – I did go last night and it was brilliant – when I got back I did tweet the blog, as I was still high on the performance and wanted to share.

When David appeared on top of the wall I was so shocked that I jumped to my feet and my brand new Blackberry bounced down the stairs and into bits in front of me and I left it there while David was on stage!! I’m not a huge RW fan, but I thought the show is quite something and he does do demented so well. :)) I also have tickets for Sunday as I was hedging my bets on when David would be on. I’m so lucky to have been there.

I hear rumours of a new album from David soon – any truth?

    Lisa – (marthasharbour1 on Twitter)

  77. Sotiris

No disappointment at all! How many times has he performed in the UK? So should I buy yesterday’s ticket to watch him perform? He should also perform in Athens. NEVER EVER SEEN him perform in Greece. WHY???

It’s a shame… great shame!!! I don’t need a DVD have seen him thousands of times on DVD. Need to watch him LIVE.

Play in all the concerts remaining. It’s not a plea, it’s a demand!! Shame on you…

  78. Luca

Oh my God…! Too great!!! Thank you Dave, Roger and Nick for this moment WITH THE PINK FLOYD!!!! :))

  79. Jamie Dobson

Was there at the 02 last night – the whole show just blew me away. Best gig ever. :D

    My Review

What an amazing 24 hours. By now, all of you will know that David joined Roger on the tour for one night, to play Comfortably Numb. I am so happy that I had the privilege of being a member of the audience. I thought I would share some moments with you guys.

I actually entered the O2 at around 6pm for dinner and a few pints with a mate. I walked into the arena realising that I shouldn’t get my hopes up, and to take in the whole show.

The first half was outstanding, and I turned my phone on at half-time. I wasn’t going to let my phone distract me from the event. I checked on the relevant Social Networking sites, and then the news was broken to me by many ‘Irregulars’ – Geoff, Ken, Lorraine, Gab and many others, that tonight was the night.

Even after being told by them of this, I was still pessimistic.

Then Roger started the song. After he started, I slowly realised there was only one guy on the wall. Seeing previous shows, it would normally be two. My heart started bouncing. As Roger was finishing, I shouted “Come On” several times. People looked around at me wondering what I was so excited about. Then David’s vocal hit.

The stadium erupted. Everyone was on their feet, clapping, hollering, in pure emotion. After two lines, everyone sang along. My seat was excellent, and I noticed Roger smiling.

History was being created, and I was part of it.

David played two excellent solos. On the second solo, before he finished I noticed him tuning his guitar. I don’t know why this was, as it did sounds very much in tune. Then again, that’s 50 odd years of experience and talent for you.

The song was brilliant. I won’t talk about the graphics, as some haven’t seen the show yet, but I am allowed to say they are jaw-droppingly good.

And then, the song had finished. Everyone joined in, in a chorus of applause.

To top it all off, David came back on to say thank you at the end of the show. He had a small guitar (didn’t know it was a mandolin), so I figured it was for ‘Outside the Wall’. The hug between David and Roger was a very heartfelt moment, as someone watching it as a third party.

And to top the night, the brilliant Nick Mason came out. To see those three on stage has honestly made me, the most happiest man on the face of this earth. What a brilliant moment.

Roger then mentioned Rick’s name. The mood went quite sombre for a brief moment, showing the respect they had for Rick.

After playing the song, three remained on stage and then left.

Thank you Roger for an amazing show. Thank you Nick, for being there for the fans. Thanks to Dave Kiliminster, who plays Comfortably Numb excellently on other nights. Thanks to David, for quite simply, a moment to never forget.

And thank you to the many Irregulars, who have contacted me to tell me that they are glad I had a good time. That shows how tight this great community is.

    • Geoff Duffy

Brill review Simon, 2 stories for the Grand kids now.

      Still gutted I missed it.

    • KenF

      Simon,

Thanks for sharing the euphoria of your ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

The whole evening seemed quite surreal, even for those of us who weren’t there to witness such an immaculate, ultimate performance of Comfortably Numb (and Outside the Wall).

The power of the interweb allowed those of us who were ‘in’ on the unfurling events of how the evening passed, in a way share this unique occasion.

These feelings (on a personal level) were only surpassed by those fortunate enough to be there ‘In the Flesh’.

Well, I’ve still got Saturday night to look forward to, which I am now relishing with renewed vigour, safe in the knowledge that there won’t be any misguided anticipation of David making an impromptu appearance.

  81. Stephanie

What a wonderful evening for all the lucky ones yesterday. These are the moments I´m thankful for the cameras in concerts because they give me the chance to take part of it.

I won´t be too jealous, you can´t have everything in life. I saw the show last year in New York and will see it again twice in June but I hope David acquired the taste for another own tour.

  82. Tony Gray

Thanks to David for playing the gig last night. I was lucky enough to be there and it made a great night into something words cannot describe. It totally blew the roof off the dome. Fantastic night.

I have been fortunate to see David and Roger on the stage on four occasions over the years but this one will be the most memorable. I still hope for more!

  83. Pav

I was one of those lucky ones to be there last night!!!

Obviously we were hoping for David to appear … and there he was standing on the top of the wall singing Comfortably Numb !!! … it was the most amazing and intense moment of the show … people got insane and there was an immense wave of cheer … every time I see the video, it kicks me and I have tears in my eyes as I had last night!

And as if that wasn’t enough, Nick Mason joined Roger and David for the last song!!! To see all 3 of them together on one stage was just incredible … that was absolutely incredible! My dream became true!

I’m still ‘high’ and trembling … AMAZING!!!

  84. strat 24

it’s wonderful for the fans, and david and roger from now, because they play for fun and just for fun, until a sequel.

i’m happy today, and you fed, and you my friends.

    david is great!!!

    W.O.W ! ! !

Having had the good fortune to be at last night’s gig (12th May 2011), the Wall Show is astounding, Roger Waters is a Musical Genius, Superb Musician and Perfectionist with no expense spared in the Technical Departments to bring this humongous show to full life. I also saw the Dark Side of The Moon concert at the O2 Arena and that was spectacular but the Wall was a better show at least in my opinion. Let’s not forget the rest of the band who worked hard at bringing the various parts to life which they did so very well. Rumours were flying that David Gilmour would play at one show, but which show?

Having heard Roger Waters interviewed last week on Radio 2 about the forthcoming Wall Shows when asked if there were any special guests, he replied No!

Fast Forward to last night’s show, when Roger started singing the first few bars of Comfortably Numb I was thinking Hm Not A Wall Song, by the bridge blinding white lights were beaming from the top of the wall and there stood the Dave Gilmour complete with his legendary Black Strat. The arena erupted into mayhem and you knew that you were witness to a unique slice of Musical History and Legend. Dave Gilmour was simply superb, what a great player he is, the tone, emotion of his playing is pure class and he was obviously enjoying this maybe more then his laidback exterior revealed?

Nick Mason, Roger Waters, David Gilmour with one missing member Richard Wright, I feel Richard was there in spirit.

    What A Gig! Blinding!

  86. Laura

I live for the day I can hear David Gilmour live. I, somehow, incredulously, inexplicably, strangely missed seeing him all these years but have been such a fan in the last few years (just as the On An Island tour was ending.)

I do take hope from a recent interview Polly gave in which she said she had lyrics to write for her husband, which leads me to believe he is working on another recording… which, fingers crossed, he would tour to the US.

I now have a travel fund going so I can be ready to fly to a major US city to see him on stage. Definitely on my Bucket List!

Can’t wait to see Polly’s photos of this latest concert.

    Cheers. :D

  87. Crimbo

Well, I was one ofthe lucky ones to be have been there Thursday night. Up to the break I was speechless at how amazing the show was (I also went to the “original” shows 30 years ago!).

The second half started, when the CN solo started I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing, DG himself soloing. The enormous emotional hit reduced me to tears, bought back decades of memories of seeing Floyd play.

Thought the show was just so good, and probably the last time it will ever be performed (RW is 67!!), I’ve just bought tickets for Saturdays show… sod the expense!

  88. Dave Elliman

I was there in 1980 in Earls Court, again a year later when they came back and last night I was there too. It was incredible. The atmosphere was good but went stratospheric when David appeared. The show’s visuals were stunning. So glad I went.

  89. Nisha (Still in India)

Amazing performance. Always a treat to see PF music played the way it was intended to be – cohesively.

Lucky you lot at the O2 ! :)

  90. Sharon Woods

What a weird and dramatic 2 weeks it’s been!

First the Royal Wedding, then OBL’s assassination by the USN Seals, now this! My in laws battling floodwaters of the MS, while I find a Luna Moth on a barrier island. Wild horses couldn’t keep me away from an island of wild horses! That was last week.

Of course I’m trying really, really hard to teleport myself to London where my mind heart and soul already are!

I’m so happy for those who saw the performance, and so sad that I wasn’t there!

It’s been my dream to see all 3 perform together, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Roger Waters, and now my dream is reality. Is this heaven? Thank you to all who made it possible.

I saw the Wall in Washington DC in October!

  91. Andrew

Promises made, promises kept. Very cool indeed.

I was lucky to see Roger and his Wall tour twice last year and it was quite an impressive production. Although I probably could have seen the original production way back when, I imagine that the advances in technology make this production more impressive. Of course for the time, the original production was probably quite impressive as well. Better stop before I get even more confused.

Anyway, an ironic twist that I see here is that Led Zeppelin (ex-John Bonham) had their final performance on the same O2 stage. If I am not mistaken, David was there. In any case, to me it seems quite fitting that this venue was chosen. Anyone know if Jimmy Page was in the audience?

I am looking forward to reading some words from David, Roger and Nick with respect to the events of the evening.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

PS – FEd, and you didn’t go?? Please don’t say you had no interest, you had something better to do or that you had tickets to see Radiohead instead. :))

    • FEd

      Radiohead tickets indeed. :/

Sadly I had other commitments which, although by no means ‘better’ than being at the O2 for such an exalted performance, did matter more.
