The blog calendar rather than my increasingly blurred memory informs me that many a blogger celebrates a birthday this month, so I’d like to express a joyful “Happy Birthday!” to Stephen for today, to Susan and Thomas for tomorrow and to everyone else who will be observing the anniversary of their birth thereafter; including David, it goes without saying, whose birthday is on Saturday.

As I know that you’d like to do the same, because some of you have already started, I’ll let you get on with it.

My thanks, on David’s behalf, for the well-wishes.

If you’d like to continue discussing the illustrious John Peel and the great many Peel Sessions of note, you are very welcome to do so (but here, not here, please).

I’d just like to wish David a very Happy Birthday for today… as I’m sure you would.

Over to you, then.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Kate Bush, by ErnestIt’s Kate’s birthday today, providing me with a perfect excuse to show off this great painting of Ernest’s, and also find out how many of you are fans.

You all know the connection: David passed Kate’s demo recordings EMI’s way and would go on to produce tracks on her debut album, ‘The Kick Inside’. More recently, Kate would be a very welcome surprise guest at David’s final Meltdown show, in 2002.

If you have a favourite Kate Bush song, album, fact or moment, we want to know about it.

Thanks for sharing your talent with us, Ernest.

If you have something similar, we’d love to see it. Just get it online and send me the URL.

The chatroom is open, and will be until 12:00 (UK), should you care to pop in. Newcomers are most welcome. Please read this first, which should tell you all you need to know.

You probably don’t need reminding, and definitely don’t need any encouraging.

But, as your birthday greetings are going to come flooding in anyway, they ought to at least be at the same place. So…

Have a very Happy Birthday, David. Enjoy your day.

Your turn.

February, 2007: Jamming at David's Barn. Photo: Polly Samson.I regret to inform you that the scheduled release of ‘Remember That Night’ in both Brazil and Mexico has been delayed.

It should have been released on Wednesday in Brazil. It’s now out on Monday 15 October instead.

The planned release for Mexico – Monday 8 October – unfortunately cannot be met due to an issue with the DVD’s packaging. I’ll have a new date for you – on our calendar – just as soon as possible.

Apologies to disappointed fans in Brazil and Mexico.

There is no confirmed date as yet for Chile, but the DVD is now available in Argentina. Again, as soon as I hear from Sony and can give you more information, I’ll update you.

The winners in our latest contest are Andrew and Ax (who each win the exclusive ‘Remember That Night’ DVD set from Borders, with poster), Adriano and Michael (who each win the Best Buy equivalent, complete with bonus AOL Sessions CD), and Craig (who wins a five-track promo CD, as issued to US radio stations in the run-up to the DVD’s release).

The winning captions can be seen at the foot of this page.

Congratulations to all five of you, and thanks to everyone who submitted a caption. Choosing the five best ones was easier than picking out three, as originally planned.

Thanks also to everyone who sent in kind words about our DMA win, plus birthday greetings. Your support is always greatly appreciated.

The latest country to propel ‘Remember That Night’ to the top of its Music DVD chart is Denmark.

It has also reached the Number One spot in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, the UK and the US, but appears to have peaked at #3 in Holland, #2 in Ireland and #6 in Spain.

I’ve got a real treat for some of you on Monday, so don’t miss it.

Until then, have a very good weekend.

Today is David’s birthday, so please feel free to burst into song, blow up some balloons or just leave a birthday greeting below by clicking on the ‘Comments’ link.

For everyone’s sake, please try to keep your message of a reasonable length. There were more than 1,300 posted last year, and I certainly wasn’t the only one to read every single one of them.

David and Polly read the blog regularly and were incredibly touched by last year’s well wishes. We’d love to see more this year. (Come on, make me earn my money…)

It’s also a year since ‘On An Island’ was released. Hasn’t the year just flown by? Your thoughts, as always, are more than welcome.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish David a very happy birthday on behalf of everyone at davidgilmour.com. Have a great day, David.

It’s the blog’s first birthday today, and the last blog day before Christmas, so I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone who has helped make the blog a success. (Er, that’s you lot: the readers and, more specifically, the writers.)

To celebrate, the chatroom will be open for most of the day (yes, it’s open now), so feel free to drop in for an imaginary tipple.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the highs, the lows and all that came in between – and hope you’ll join us for more of the same in 2007.

On behalf of everyone at davidgilmour.com, have a very Merry Christmas… and a Happy Birthday as well.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Our four competition winners are… Cory, Gus, Mikael and Pepe.

Congratulations to you. We’ve got your addresses, so please expect your DVDs to arrive next week.

It’s DavidGilmour.com’s birthday on Thursday. Unbelievably, the website has been going strong for a whole year.

It hasn’t been a bad year, has it? A new album, a tour, lots of singles, David on TV, DVD and even in the cinema…

The blog doesn’t celebrate its first birthday until 22 December, so expect some more blog-focused nonsense leading up to the date.

For today, I just want to welcome your thoughts on the past year. I like to think of it as a ‘looking back’/'highs and lows’-type blog day, or something. (Eh, Pete?)

On Thursday, I’ll start our very own Blog Awards. It goes without saying that you’ll be the ones doing the voting, so do get involved if you want to. I have the categories lined up, but if you can think of any good ones, feel free to throw suggestions my way.

Now, let’s all hold hands and merrily skip down memory lane…

You’ve left your messages of thanks and appreciation for Steve DiStanislao, Jon Carin, Dick Parry and Guy Pratt, so today it’s the turn of Mr Richard Wright.

It’s also Richard’s birthday today. Happy birthday, Richard!

Anyone who was fortunate enough to attend one of David’s concerts will tell you that the ovation Richard received when introduced to the audience was extraordinary. So let us know what it meant to you to have Richard on the tour and, if there are a few short words you’d like to forward to Richard, please go ahead.

Who knows? The next time Richard is visiting Guy, he might just be tempted to leave another message for us. (There’s nothing like a little emotional blackmail, is there?)

Thanks for keeping yesterday’s blog ‘On An Island’-free to allow as many birthday greetings as possible. Quite a few, weren’t there? Thank you all very much for your well wishes. David was touched by the staggering number of messages posted and would like to thank you all.

Some parts of the world are still waiting for the release of ‘On An Island’ (you poor, unfortunate people), but most of the planet has now heard it and we’d love to know what you think of it.

David and his band are, of course, performing tonight at the Mermaid Theatre in Blackfriars, London. If you will be there, then have a terrific night. We would appreciate it, however, if you could keep details of the concert to a minimum. The tour starts in its own right in Dortmund on Friday, and although we have no doubt that fansites will spill the beans before then, we won’t.

So enjoy, but please don’t spoil it for the many fans who, for their sins, like being kept in suspense. Thank you.

Don’t forget that BBC Radio 2 will have exclusive video footage of the Mermaid Theatre gig on Saturday 11 March. Please visit the website for further details. You will be able to replay this as many times as you can manage courtesy of the ‘Listen Again’ feature, which allows you to replay any programme a week after it is first broadcast. We’ll remind you of this on Saturday so that no one misses out.

Yes, ‘On An Island’ hits the shops in the UK today and you all have to rush out and buy at least one copy if you aren’t waiting for the postman to deliver it.

But, above all, it’s David’s 60th birthday today, so let’s have your birthday greetings from around the world instead.

As hard as it is, if you could please refrain from commenting on the album until tomorrow, when fans in North America will also have heard it, tomorrow’s blog can be choc-a-block full of album-related opinions and thoughts.

As you know, David and Polly check up on us, so I think it would be fitting to show our thanks, appreciation and gratitude for the man who has given us such great music down the years, not least such a personal and meaningful new album this year.

I’ll leave it to you to send David your birthday greetings, however you deem fit.

Please keep them of a reasonable length, if you can. The more individual comments we have, and the easier it is for everyone to read through them all, the better.

Happy Birthday, David!

The fallen genius who turned Pink Floyd into the leading psychedelic band of the day, and amazed everyone (even The Beatles!) with ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’, is 60 today.

David would like to take this opportunity to send his warmest wishes to his friend, Roger Keith Barrett, who will always be affectionately known to those who knew and loved him – not to mention the many who have been touched and inspired by his music – simply as ‘Syd’.

As well as his vital contribution to Pink Floyd’s second album ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’, Syd has made two solo albums, ‘The Madcap Laughs’ and ‘Barrett’. There is also the ‘Opel’ compilation of studio outtakes. If you haven’t heard them, then do give them a try.

David has always championed Syd’s music and produced almost all of Syd’s studio sessions from July 1969. He fought to include as many of Syd’s songs on Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’ compilation, as well as performing several of Syd’s songs live – most notably ‘Terrapin’ and ‘Dominoes’ in 2001 and 2002.

We hope you can find time today to play some of Syd’s songs and to remember him as the creative genius who wrote such enchanting and thought-provoking lyrics, dared to be different and inspired myriad artists to follow him into the music business.

Feel free to let us know what Syd’s music means to you and, of course, to send him your birthday greetings. Even though it’s now been some 35 years since Syd retired from public life, his music will always live on and continue to move people. Let it move you today.

We leave you with a recent excerpt from Guitar & Bass magazine, which pertains to Syd’s legacy in Pink Floyd:

He recognised Syd Barrett as a genius, even though he had to watch his friend’s stability crumble. Gilmour was invited to the recording session for the band’s second single ‘See Emily Play’, and recalls even then that Syd didn’t recognise him. ‘He looked through you. He wasn’t quite there.’ Since then, he has ensured Syd has benefited from royalties generated by five songs included on the ‘Echoes’ compilation and ‘Astronomy Domine’, performed on the 1994 tour and later released as part of the album ‘Pulse’.
