Yes, that’s right. Back next week. Which is a huge improvement on last year’s effort, isn’t it? That’s hard work and dedication for you.

Seriously, thanks for bearing with me while I make some necessary alterations. I hope you’ll like them.

I also hope you’ve voted in the Triple J poll. If you tried, but found that you couldn’t submit your details, enter ’7000′ as the postcode and be sure to state that you’re from overseas.

And don’t put it off, do it now. Voting closes tomorrow.

Here’s my list (with links to a few MySpace, Facebook and Last.fm pages, should you fancy a listen):

- Augi March, ‘Lupus’
- Coldplay, ‘Violet Hill’
- Elbow, ‘Grounds for Divorce’
- Fleet Foxes, ‘He Doesn’t Know Why’
- Kings of Leon, ‘Sex On Fire’
- Little Red, ‘Witchdoctor’
- Metallica, ‘The Day That Never Comes’
- Razorlight, ‘Wire to Wire’
- The Rocketsmiths, ‘Boy Who Cried Misery’

It was actually quite difficult keeping to ten, in the end. (Had to squeeze ‘Echoes’ from GdaƄsk in, naturally.) I’d love to discuss these tunes with you sometime. Note to self: open comments ASAP.

I’ll be asking for your Best and Worst of 2008 lists soon (song, album, concert, DVD, book, etc.), so have a think about that.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and I’ll see you at the earliest opportunity next week.

Australian radio station, Triple J, has its annual music poll running right now.

It’s apparently the world’s largest, attracting over half a million votes each year.

The most popular 100 tunes are counted down over the weekend of Australia Day: 26 January.

Anyone can vote for any ten songs, just as long as they were released in 2008.

If you need help choosing a song which isn’t on ‘Live in GdaƄsk’, suggestions are provided.

Add your own if you don’t find what you’re looking for (you won’t), and compile a short-list of tracks on the right. Whittle it down to your final ten, and the rest is self-explanatory.

You have until Sunday 18 January.

David rehearsing in GdaƄsk, 26 August 2006

This is an early reminder to find time this week to listen to Radcliffe & Maconie.

Their show is on BBC Radio 2 tomorrow night (Tuesday 9 December), 20:00-22:00 (UK).

Re-scheduled from September, it includes ‘Echoes’ live from GdaƄsk in its glorious entirety.

I’m sure you’ve heard it a few times already, but it’s always good to hear David on the radio, isn’t it?

And – breaking news – it’s just been revealed that David will also perform Syd Barrett’s ‘Here I Go’ for the very first time.

You can listen to the show online no matter where you are, live or on demand (listen live, just in case).

If you’re in the UK, tune in to 88-91 FM on the night. Alternatively, listen through either your DAB digital radio or television set: channel 0102 on Sky, 902 on Virgin and 702 on Freeview.

You want the second hour.

If you want the chatroom, it’s now open – and will be until 15:00 (UK).

Back in 2003, David chose eight songs. Songs that, should he ever be so unfortunate as to find himself stranded on a desert island with only a music-playing contraption of some sort, two books and one luxury item, he’d be glad to have with him.

  • ‘Waterloo Sunset’ by the Kinks
  • ‘Ballad in Plain D’ by Bob Dylan
  • ‘I’m Still Here’ by Tom Waits
  • ‘Dancing in the Street’ by Martha and the Vandellas
  • ‘Anthem’ by Leonard Cohen
  • ‘A Man Needs a Maid’ by Neil Young
  • ‘For Free’ by Joni Mitchell
  • ‘Rudi with a Flashlight’ by the Lemonheads

His chosen book, by the way, was the Q’oran. His luxury item, not surprisingly, an acoustic Martin D35.

Do list yours, if you wish.

No more than eight, though, no matter how hard it is to choose. And remember: that’s eight songs, not eight albums or, knowing you lot, the complete works of eight musicians, including every person they’ve ever shared a stage, tour bus, dinner table or birthday with. (I know.)

Of greater interest, I’d like to know your thoughts on the eight songs – and artists – shown here.

Continuing with the previous post’s theme, can you imagine David covering any of these?

If not David, who could?

The 2008 Poppy, as produced by the Royal British Legion

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the end of The Great War (supposedly the war to end all wars), and is a recognised day of remembrance in many countries – be it known as Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Veterans Day or Poppy Day.

It doesn’t matter who, or what, the many million casualties of war were fighting for, or how we may personally feel about any – or all – military conflict today: we should remember them and what they gave.

So, as we’ve done before for other (lesser) occasions, I’d like to be reminded of the most poignant songs of war and peace, to honour all those who sacrificed so much so that we may enjoy a better life.

Two that spring to mind are ‘Berliners’, by Roy Harper (with the moving stanza from Laurence Binyon’s poem, ‘For The Fallen’), and, of course, Pink Floyd’s ‘When The Tigers Broke Free’, from ‘The Wall’ film.

Comments about David’s performance of ‘Albatross’ to be left here, not here, please.

Thank you.

Jools Holland during the recording of 'On an Island'

You won’t want to miss this, I’m sure.

David will perform Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Albatross’ next week: on Jools Holland’s Radio 2 show, Monday 10 November.

He’ll also be chatting about ‘Live in GdaƄsk’.

Everyone can listen live online, so set space in your schedule between the hours of 22:30 and 23:30 (UK).

You can listen later, on demand, for one week (courtesy of the BBC iPlayer), but possibly only if you’re in the UK, so do try and catch it live, if you can.

The chatroom has just opened, so feel free to call in. It will be open until 12:00 (UK).

The Mexican Strat, signed by the members of Pink Floyd and hand-painted by Gerald Scarfe

The guitar mentioned a few months back – a Mexican Strat, painted by Gerald Scarfe and signed by all members of Pink Floyd – is being auctioned online from Wednesday 15 October. That’s next week.

If you’re interested in bidding, you will need to register first.

The winning bidder will also acquire the first edition of a limited box set containing eight prints from ‘The Wall’, each of which has been signed by Gerald, as well as a signed book.

A portion of the sale will go to a charity close to David’s heart, Crisis.

Don’t forget ‘Remember a Day: Richard Wright in His Own Words’ tomorrow night, BBC Radio 2 at 19:00 (UK). You can all listen live online, or for a full week later at your convenience, courtesy of the BBC’s Listen Again feature.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

David on stage in GdaƄsk, by Piotr Tarasewicz

A quick round-up of reminders.

First, the Planet Rock/Guy Pratt interview you were expecting tonight is now on Sunday at 17:00 (UK). Listen online. If you’re in the UK, you can also listen through your TV or DAB digital radio.

Before that, you might be interested in a radio special – which includes an interview – from Belgium, which starts on Sunday morning at 09:00 (CET), on Classic 21.

There’s more from Later… with Jools Holland tonight, as part of a BBC night dedicated to David. That starts at 21:10 (UK) on BBC4 with an hour from the GdaƄsk concert, plus the ‘GdaƄsk Diary’ DVD extra, followed by another documentary: ‘The Pink Floyd Story…’ (originally broadcast in 1994).

Turn over to BBC2 or BBC HD immediately after that, as David will be performing ‘The Blue’ and ‘Remember a Day’ for Jools, from 23:35 (UK).

The BBC4 programmes are repeated in the early hours of Saturday morning – from 01:30 (UK).

If you can’t wait for your next fix, here is something from New Zealand’s 3 News, something from today’s Sun newspaper, and, if you haven’t heard it yet, last weekend’s US radio special in full.

The Blog’s now closed for the weekend, but will be back on Monday.

David rehearsing in GdaƄsk, 26 August 2006

Seeing as some of you have already heard this news over the airwaves this evening…

Do tune in to Radcliffe & Maconie for a live ‘Echoes’ exclusive on Wednesday 24 September.

As well as ‘Echoes’ in all its glory, David will chat.

You can listen online, either live (Listen in the top-right) or by selecting Listen Again (scroll down the page and select the desired day; you have a full week after the broadcast to do so).

That’s Wednesday 24 September between 20:00 and 22:00 (UK), BBC Radio 2.

If you’re in the UK, you can find Radio 2 at 88-91 FM, listen through your DAB
digital radio or even your television: channel 0102 on Sky, 902 on Virgin and 702 on Freeview.

Stuart Maconie, you may recall, compĂšred the ‘Remember That Night’ premiere at London’s Leicester Square last year.

Don’t forget the current issue of Mojo magazine, available now, which is worth picking up. It’s the one with Queen on the cover.

Guy on stage in GdaƄsk, 26 August 2006

Something else for your calendars, in case you’ve not seen ours: an interview on Planet Rock, which you can hear on Friday 26 September.

If you’re in the UK and possess a DAB digital radio, Planet Rock sounds very good on it. Alternatively, tune in through your television: channels 0110 on Sky, 924 on Virgin.

Everyone can listen online and there is a playback feature, should you miss it when it goes out ‘live’.

As it’s not obvious, please note that you need to click LISTEN NOW (at the top) to be able to listen again. The player will then pop up in a new window, where the archives and how you play back old shows (LISTEN AGAIN) becomes apparent.

You can try out that feature right now, in fact. Try Last 7 Days: Nicky Horne and (29/08/08).

Another Indie store for you to consider: LUNA Music, who have two stores in Indianapolis. Their prices are $32.98 for the three-disc and $46.98 for the four-disc. Don’t forget, you also get that exclusive ‘Wot’s…’ CD thrown in, and they’ll ship worldwide.

A beautiful sunset, courtesy of RobHere’s August’s, courtesy of Rob, who says it reminds him of ‘Where We Start’.

What do you think? Click for a better look.

Very nice, Rob. Thanks for sharing.

You can hear three songs (no, not ‘Echoes’…) from ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ on Planet Rock tonight from 22:00 (UK). Listen online (either live or later, on demand) or, if you’re in the UK, through your television: channels 0110 and 924 on Sky and Virgin respectively.

The Uncut magazine mentioned yesterday is now in the Press archive, so have a read.

And just to follow up on that Indie store promotion: Fingerprints – of Long Beach, California – is one such store that will ship to many parts of the world. If you really, really want that exclusive ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ CD, do consider them. I’ll have their prices and shipping rates next week, so please don’t contact them to ask for them.

That’s all for another week. More on Monday, when it will be September and we’ll all be inching that little bit nearer to the release of ‘Live in GdaƄsk’, in all its forms.

Until then, have a lovely weekend.

'Remember That Night' DVD

A reminder that 75 minutes from ‘Remember That Night’ will be broadcast on HBO Plus across Latin and Central America tonight, and again on Monday.

That’s Friday 22 August and Monday 25 August – at midnight (local time).

So, if you’re in Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, the Caribbean (but not Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands, sorry), Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay or Venezuela, and if you get HBO Plus – enjoy. It’s always good to see David on TV.

Wherever you are, you can listen again to David’s Mermaid Theatre concert (from March 2006) from 22:00 (CET) tonight, courtesy of Belgian radio station, Classic 21.

Click here to listen live online (select >24k or, preferably, >128k from the menu bar).

The Blog will now be closed until Tuesday, when we’ll be remembering the final concert of the ‘On an Island’ tour: GdaƄsk.

Until then, have a nice weekend.

Blog Poll: What did you think of the BBC's 'Seven Ages of Rock' programme, which covered Pink Floyd? 75% vote 'Good', 5% vote 'Bad' and 25% vote 'Pass'.…du Rock’.

Better known as ‘The Seven Ages of Rock’, the second programme in this BBC series is about to be broadcast once more in Belgium and Switzerland – and wherever else channels TSR2 and La Une can be received by cable or satellite.

The programme – entitled ‘White Light, White Heat: Art Rock, 1966-1980′ – includes a considerable portion reserved for discussion of, and footage from, Pink Floyd. David was interviewed for the programme, so that might be ‘new’ footage for you, as well as snippets of one or two early rarities. Click here for more on that.

That’s tonight, Sunday 13 July – on TSR2 – at 21:25 (CET), then Monday 14 July – on La Une – at 22:00 (CET).

As we’ve been talking about Syd all week, I’d be interested to hear how well you felt the programme explained his gradual retirement from the music industry and, indeed, the public eye. As one viewer noted on the BBC site: “Awful overview of the Syd Barrett story. Subjective twaddle, giving people the hyped-up myth they want to hear.”

Do you agree with this statement?

14 March 2008 at 13:34 | Comments (38)

You may be aware of the situation facing Planet Rock.

In short, the station needs to find a buyer by 28 March, otherwise it will be taken off-air.

To make it a more attractive proposition to prospective buyers, Planet Rock would like to demonstrate its considerable popular support.

That’s where you lot come into it.

As well as being able to tune in – through your DAB radio or TV set (channels 0110 and 924 on Sky and Cable respectively) – in the UK, everyone can listen online.

And many of you have done just that: both Guy Pratt and Phil Manzanera have hosted shows within the last few months, which we’ve talked about here.

It’s a great station, playing great music, and it would be a shame to lose it. So, if you want to help the cause, click here to find out what you can do.

Remember That Night DVD (2007)David’s new double-DVD, ‘Remember That Night’, is released in Canada and the United States today, meaning that it is now available all over Europe (except for Finland and Sweden, where it is released tomorrow) and North America.

What do you think of it? I want to know your thoughts on everything from the packaging to the concert, the documentaries to the… other things.

It is released in Australia on Saturday and New Zealand and South Africa on Monday.

Fans in Brazil, Mexico and Japan will have to wait a little longer for it, sadly. Please see the calendar for all release dates.

Don’t forget that David will be on Steve Wright’s BBC Radio 2 show today. David will be chatting to Steve at about 4.25PM (UK), and you can all listen online. Please see yesterday’s entry for a how-to.

Remember That Night DVD (2007)IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: RADIO 2 TOMORROW

I’ve just heard that David will now be on Radio 2 tomorrow, not today. So, that’s Steve Wright’s show, tomorrow, from 2PM (UK).

I’ve really enjoyed your musings on Saturday’s North American premiere. If you were involved, I want to hear from you.

I’ve two things for you all to enjoy today:

1. David on Steve Wright’s BBC Radio 2 show from 2PM (UK).
2. David on ITV’s London Tonight from 6PM (UK).

It doesn’t matter where in the world you are, as everyone can enjoy these online.

If you are in the UK, then you can find Radio 2 at 88-91 FM. If that’s too old-fashioned for your liking, then you could listen via DAB digital radio, digital satellite (Sky, channel 0102), digital cable (Virgin, channel 860 or 902, depending on whether you are an ex-NTL or ex-Telewest customer) or even Freeview (channel 702).

If you’re listening online, you can listen live by clicking Listen in the top-right corner or by clicking the more forthright LISTEN in the suitably coloured ‘On An Island’ blue box to the right of the page. That opens up the BBC Radio Player, which gives you the option to listen with Real Player or Windows Media Player, if you prefer.

If you can’t listen live, there is always the handy ‘Listen Again’ feature, which allows you to replay the programme as many times as you like for a period of seven days following the original broadcast. This can be activated by opening the BBC Radio Player, as directed above, and choosing your desired show from a considerably long list.

A quick note to fans in the USA about tomorrow’s DVD release…

DVDs from Best Buy and Borders stores contain extra goodies.

Select DVDs from Best Buy will include a three-track audio CD of the AOL Sessions. The songs are ‘On An Island’, ‘Take A Breath’ and ‘High Hopes’. The CD comes in a cardboard sleeve which is inside the DVD’s shrink-wrapped packaging.

The Borders DVD package includes a mini-poster. This shows David at Abbey Road, with the band onstage behind him and green lasers. The poster’s size is approximately four-times the size of the DVD booklet. This can be found inside the (shrink-wrapped) DVD case.

Look out for stickers announcing the exclusive extras on the front of the DVD cover before you buy.

These are available in the US only.

‘Remember That Night’ is released across Europe today (except for Finland and Sweden, where it is released on Wednesday).

12 September 2007 at 18:31 | Comments (94)

Remember That Night DVD (2007)Thought you might like to know about AOL’s video exclusives. They have ‘The Blue’, ‘Coming Back To Life’, ‘Fat Old Sun’, ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Take A Breath’ available here for your viewing pleasure.

Also, be sure to check out their video archive for more goodies.

Two other points of interest:

First, David will be on Steve Wright’s BBC Radio 2 show on Monday between 2PM and 5PM (UK time).

If you’re in the UK, you can tune in at 88-91 FM, listen via DAB digital radio, digital satellite (Sky, channel 0102), digital cable (Virgin, channel 860 or 902, depending on whether you are an ex-NTL or ex-Telewest customer) and even Freeview (channel 702).

Everyone can listen online.

If you can’t listen live, then there is always the handy ‘Listen Again’ feature, which allows you to play the programme back as many times as you like for a period of seven days following the original broadcast.

David will also being doing an interview on ITV’s London Tonight on Monday, which starts at 6PM (UK).

Of course, I’ll remind you of these programmes on Monday.

There’s also some news about the varying European release dates for David’s ‘Remember That Night’ DVD on the Latest News page. Dates are also noted on the calendar for ease of reference.

24 August 2007 at 16:00 | Comments (44)

Remember That Night DVD (2007)And ‘G’ is for ‘Gilmour’, so don’t miss Phil Manzanera’s radio show this weekend, because he will be talking about our David.

You’re looking for Planet Rock, which can be found online, on your DAB Digital Radio (if you’re in the UK), or on your television (again, if you’re in the UK). That’s channel 0110 on Sky, channel 924 on Virgin.

‘A is for Axe: The A-Z of the World’s Greatest Guitarists’ is an hour-long show, on every Sunday at 8PM (UK), with a repeat broadcast on Fridays at 6PM (UK).

You have exactly one hour left to submit a question for David (only if you reside in Europe, or will be attending one of the cinemas in Europe on Thursday 6 September, that is). The deadline is 5PM (UK), so don’t leave it much later or you’ll miss out.

Please leave your question (singular) here, after you’ve carefully read the terms and conditions at the top of the page.

Thank you to everyone for submitting a question. There are plenty of good ones to choose from – many more than I require – so apologies in advance to the majority of you.

If you don’t see your question listed with all the others, then it wasn’t considered. This was either because you sent in a list of questions, tried sending in multiple questions under different aliases, or asked a question from our ‘Forbidden and Incredibly Dull’ list.

This was all plainly, and repeatedly, set out in the terms – which you should have read before sending a question – so please don’t bother sending a complaint. That, too, will be treated as junk.

I’ll let you know which questions were chosen, as I will for the North American Q&A, next week.

Please remember that, even if your question is chosen, there is no guarantee that it will be used at the Odeon. I will select ten questions and ask ten people to send in their video, audio and photo. However, for reasons of time and technology, there can be no guarantee that all ten will be used on the night.

There’s a new poll today, so you can tell us if you will be going to see ‘Remember That Night’ at the cinema with just a click or two of your mouse.

(According to the results of our last poll, 61% of you said that you’d be sending a question for David’s Q&A. Thank you very much.)

Polls can always be found at the bottom-left corner of the Stuff & Nonsense page.

While you’re there, do have a listen to some interesting snippets from ‘This Heaven’, leave a message for David at his GuestMap and be sure to check out his MySpace page.

That’s all for another week. Back on Wednesday.

April 2006: Luka's Taproom & Lounge, Oakland, CaliforniaBassist and all-round funny man, Guy Pratt, is guest hosting another show on Planet Rock this weekend – and you really don’t want to miss Saturday’s.

If you’re in the UK and have a digital radio, you can search for ‘Planet Rock’. Alternatively, you can listen through your television set: channel 0110 on Sky, 924 on Virgin TV.

Best of all, you can listen online, regardless of your whereabouts.

The chatroom is open to our ‘Irregular’* friends all weekend, so why not listen with us?

Guy’s show is on between 9PM and midnight (UK), Saturday and Sunday.

There is a scheduled chat today between 3PM and 5PM (UK), where everybody is most welcome.

Thank you for all the questions sent in for David and the North American premiere of ‘Remember That Night’. No further questions will be considered after 5PM (UK) tonight, don’t forget, so please be sure to get your question in, if you haven’t already done so. It will not be eligible after 5PM, no matter what your excuse is.

I want questions for the UK & Europe premiere next week. The floodgates open on Monday morning. So, if you’re in Europe or will be going to one of the European cinemas on Thursday 6 September, I want to hear from you. Just not until Monday.

Don’t forget that, if you’re in the UK, you have another chance to see David’s brilliant ‘Live From Abbey Road’ performance in the early hours of Sunday morning. See the calendar for details.

And while you’re taking mental notes of what you mustn’t forget, do be sure to pay the Stuff & Nonsense page a visit before the weekend is over. There are five variations of ‘Take A Breath’ waiting for you.

The answer to yesterday’s Name That Tune? ‘Fat Old Sun’. Rather fitting, once you see what I’ve got for you over the weekend…

* To be considered an ‘Irregular’, you have to be a regular contributor. Unfortunately, the chatroom cannot stay open to everyone all weekend… for obvious reasons. However, anyone can join the ‘Irregular’ ranks. You just need to make the effort to join in. To be invited to such ‘lock-ins’, all you need to do is show up at a few of the scheduled chats and play nicely with the others. Details of all chats are always plainly listed on our calendar. Everybody is welcome at these sessions. Unfortunately, because of the odd muppet, only those who are invited get into our ‘lock-ins’. Apologies for any disappointment, but I’m sure you can appreciate the situation.
