Another surprise appearance from David last night, then (see the Latest News page for the whats and wherfores) – this time with Jeff Beck at London’s Royal Albert Hall, scene of the shows that made up the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD.

If you were there, I’m sure we’d all love to hear from you.

If you weren’t there, please take a moment to stop kicking yourself and tell us which of David’s many guest appearances has pleased you most, however surprising they may have been.

In terms of one-off shows, that 1999 gig at Liverpool’s Cavern – with Paul McCartney, Mick Green, Ian Paice and Pete Wingfield – has to be my favourite.

Remember That Night DVD

I’m preaching to the converted here, I know, but someone might like to know that 75 glorious minutes from ‘Remember That Night’ are being shown again on UK TV today (or tomorrow, if you haven’t gone to bed yet): at 09:00 and again at 16:00 on Sky Arts 1 (channel 256) and Sky Arts HD (channel 258).

Sky Arts 1 is also available to Virgin Media (XL) customers now and can be found on channel 284.

If you spot anything of interest coming up in the TV listings, particularly if it’s DG-related, but even if it’s not, please don’t keep it to yourself.

The chatroom will be open later, so you’re more than welcome to call in if you’ve nothing better to do between the hours of 14:00 and 16:00 (UK).

Blog Poll: Have you seen the extra live concert footage from Gdańsk, not included on the DVD? 26% vote 'Yes', 74% vote 'No'.

You have three more opportunities to see the extended ‘Live in GdaÅ„sk’ on VH1 Classic in the States this week: at 01:00 (EST) this morning, at 17:00 (EST) on Thursday, and at 19:00 (EST) on Saturday.

Please check those times for your own peace of mind, as there is some confusion over listings.

If you’ve seen it already, what did you think of the additional tracks?

Extra songs included in the broadcast are ‘Speak To Me’, ‘Breathe’, ‘Time’, ‘Breathe (Reprise)’, ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’.

If you haven’t seen it, do set your TiVo.

Who has TiVo, or something like it, anyway? I’d love to know.

Still with the USA… Coming up on RAVE this week, ‘Scotty Moore and Friends: A Tribute to the King of Rock and Roll’. That’s Wednesday afternoon at 13:00 (EST). David performs ‘Don’t’.

Then, on Saturday 25 October, an hour-and-a-half from ‘Remember That Night’, starting at 17:00 (EST). It’s repeated in the early hours of Sunday morning – at 03:00 (EST).

Frank and Steve DiStanislao at Leicester Square, 6 September 2007

As difficult as it may be to believe, many of you were loitering around Leicester Square this time last year, waiting for the European premiere of ‘Remember That Night’.

If you were there and have anything to say on the matter, please go ahead.

And if you were watching in cinemas around Europe, we’d also love to hear from you.

Today’s photo, kindly sent in by Frank, is of him meeting Steve DiStanislao inside the Odeon.

Thank you for sharing it with us, Frank.

Sky Arts will be broadcasting 75 minutes from ‘Remember That Night’ tonight. So, if you’re a Sky customer, tune in to Sky Arts (channel 256) or Sky Arts HD (channel 257) from 21:00 (UK).

Last, but by no means least… If you’re still waiting for details on those US cinemas involved in the ‘Live in GdaÅ„sk’ premiere, all I can say is that the full list will be on the Latest News page as soon as possible.

David rehearsing in Gdańsk, 26 August 2006

Seeing as some of you have already heard this news over the airwaves this evening…

Do tune in to Radcliffe & Maconie for a live ‘Echoes’ exclusive on Wednesday 24 September.

As well as ‘Echoes’ in all its glory, David will chat.

You can listen online, either live (Listen in the top-right) or by selecting Listen Again (scroll down the page and select the desired day; you have a full week after the broadcast to do so).

That’s Wednesday 24 September between 20:00 and 22:00 (UK), BBC Radio 2.

If you’re in the UK, you can find Radio 2 at 88-91 FM, listen through your DAB
digital radio or even your television: channel 0102 on Sky, 902 on Virgin and 702 on Freeview.

Stuart Maconie, you may recall, compèred the ‘Remember That Night’ premiere at London’s Leicester Square last year.

Don’t forget the current issue of Mojo magazine, available now, which is worth picking up. It’s the one with Queen on the cover.

'Remember That Night' DVD

A reminder that 75 minutes from ‘Remember That Night’ will be broadcast on HBO Plus across Latin and Central America tonight, and again on Monday.

That’s Friday 22 August and Monday 25 August – at midnight (local time).

It’s always good to see David on TV.

Wherever you are, you can listen again to David’s Mermaid Theatre concert (from March 2006) from 22:00 (CET) tonight, courtesy of Belgian radio station, Classic 21.

Click here to listen live online (select >24k or, preferably, >128k from the menu bar).

Until then, have a nice weekend.

Syd Barrett, by IkkarThank you all for the lovely comments about Syd.

And thank you, Ikkar, for sharing your artwork with us.

Which of Syd’s songs can you imagine David singing?

On the last tour, David covered ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Dark Globe’ and ‘Dominoes’, and on his previous solo outing in 2002, ‘Terrapin’.

Not to mention ‘Arnold Layne’, which was released as a single and is a highlight of the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD (sung by Richard Wright and David Bowie).

You’ll be able to hear ‘Dominoes’ (from Paris) on the forthcoming ‘Live in GdaÅ„sk’ album – unless you opt for either the two-disc or vinyl set, that is – as it’s one of 12 live tracks included on a bonus CD, and will also be available for download.

‘Astronomy Domine’ (from GdaÅ„sk, naturally) is also included on a bonus DVD, as well as featuring on the album itself.

Both ‘Dominoes’ and ‘Terrapin’ are included on David’s 2002 ‘In Concert’ DVD.

Do you have a favourite of those tracks already covered?

There’s no chat today, but the chatroom will be open tomorrow: between 11:00 and 13:00 (UK).

Gilmourettes in London for the North American premiere of 'Remember That Night'

My favourite fan photo for the merry month of May is this one.

That’s Becky, Melissa and Tracy, in London for the North American premiere of ‘Remember That Night’, last year.

Love those T-shirts, ladies!

If you have a snap to share, please get it online and let me know where I can find it. There are many more to come, but additional offerings are always welcome.

I’m sure that we’d all like to know the stories behind the photos, too…

David on the cover of Guitarra Total magazineSpanish magazine, Guitarra Total, has a six-page article about our David. Or his increasingly famous black Strat, to be more precise.

It’s available to buy, should you require your own glossy copy, in Spain, Portugal and Mexico.

If your Spanish is up to it, or if you just like looking at the pictures, please click the magazine cover.

Many thanks to Manel for kindly scanning and sending this article.

The chatroom is closed today, but will be open tomorrow between 09:00 and 11:00 (UK).

Don’t forget that part of ‘Remember That Night’ is on 3sat this afternoon…

And, as I know you’re wondering, I’m sorry to say that there is still no update on the Signature Strat. When there is one, details will be here ASAP.

'Remember That Night' coverJust to let you know, footage from David’s ‘Remember That Night’ DVD is being shown on 3sat tomorrow afternoon.

So, if you’re in Europe and know of anyone who has yet to see what wonders David and the band produced at the Royal Albert Hall in 2006, possibly because you won’t lend them your DVD, let them know what they’ve been missing all these months.

3sat is available on ASTRA 19° in the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Latvia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, the UK and the Canary Islands.

Thank you for all your DVD Easter Eggs comments. It was nice to know that you found everything.

Here’s what’s hidden – and ‘hidden’ – on the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD:

Disc One

Nothing much here, but it was quite enjoyable letting you believe that there could be something other than Wireman serving ice cream after ‘Where We Start’ (if you chose to ‘Play All’). If you hadn’t noticed it, give it a try.

Disc Two

Starting with everyone’s favourite…

The impromptu acoustic ‘Echoes’ from Abbey Road immediately follows ‘Dark Globe’, but only if you select ‘Dark Globe’ from the menu. You miss it if you choose to ‘Play All’.

David playing the cümbüş (on a yacht, back in 1993) can be found if you wait for a firework to appear on the main menu. You have to be quick with your remote control’s Enter/OK button.

Some fans dancing at the Royal Albert Hall to a dance remix of ‘On An Island’ can be enjoyed (?) if you catch the firework on the ‘Royal Albert Hall’ sub-menu. Again, be quick.

The documentary, ‘Breaking Bread, Drinking Wine’, has bonus footage/extended scenes – as explained at the start. Press Enter/OK when you see Wireman appear in the top-right. Titles and times are as follows:

Guy’s Tour Bag: 0:19:42
Wine Glasses: 0:26:14
Philadelphia Story: 0:37:40
Burano Trip: 0:40:56

Wireman is your prompt during ‘The Making of ‘On an Island”, too. There are eight bonus clips of David discussing the album. No imaginative titles for these ones, but here are the times, should you need to know them: 0:01:02, 0:04:05, 0:06:44, 0:09:03, 0:10:07, 00:12:03, 0:13:40 and 0:15:09.

So, that’s it.

Thanks again for your patience in waiting for this list, not to mention your efforts in finding the goodies.

You know that David will be putting out a live album in the not-too-distant future, right? And that it will be a recording of the GdaÅ„sk concert from August 2006, with ‘assorted extras’ thrown in?

Well, David doesn’t want to give too much away just yet, because it’s obviously still a work in progress and things do change, but I can say that there will be a documentary included in some shape or form.

And that’s all I can say, but speculate yourselves silly, if you wish.

A bonus disc? Audio? Video? Maybe a means of viewing online, or perhaps it’s something you download? Is it only about GdaÅ„sk? Is it an edit of ‘Remember That Night’ material, or made up of brand new footage?

So many questions, yet no answer other than the usual apologetic repetition about how that’s all you’re getting for now, unfortunately. There’ll be more when the time is right.

Still, it’ll be good to know what your inquisitive little minds are thinking, and hoping for, right about now. I think I can hear the whirring and clunking from here…

That’s all for another week, so enjoy the weekend. (Perhaps you’ll find time for one last check of the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD before every disputable ‘Easter Egg’ is listed next week?)

Werner with Igor Sklyarov and his band in Venice

My chosen fan photo for the month of March is this one, courtesy of Werner.

Werner, seen here on the left, met Igor Sklyarov (second left) and his band on the streets of Venice on 12 August 2006.

Igor, or course, was invited by David to perform on stage after David had spotted him busking.

Thanks to everyone for forwarding a photo for consideration. I enjoyed seeing them, and will be showing off many more as the weeks roll by.

If you have one and want to see it here, get it online and include the URL with your comment.

Thanks again for sharing this with us, Werner.

The chatroom is closed today, but will be open tomorrow from 13:00 (UK).

The assorted ‘hidden’ extras from the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD are still being discussed here, by the way.

David on stage in RomeThe tenth ‘On An Island’ concert was in Rome. It was also the European mainland’s final show… or so we all thought.

After this, the band took a short break and headed to the States.

If you were in attendance at the Auditorium Parco della Musica two years ago, let us know.

This photo (yes, with added fret markers, we know) turned out to be the cover for David’s ‘Remember That Night’ DVD.

The chatroom is open today from 11:30 (UK).

Front cover of David's 'Remember That Night' DVDWell, did you find them all?

Now don’t be a show-off, but I’m sure some people would love to know which ones you found and what you enjoyed most.

I’m sure that most of us could guess what you enjoyed most…

Just one at a time, please.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then David’s ‘Remember That Night’ DVD included some hidden video goodies, accessible by various means. Commonly known as ‘Easter Eggs’, these surprise clips were deliberately dotted around the two discs for you to find.

Some like to hunt for them, others stumble upon them purely by chance.

Either way, if you found any, now’s the time for you to reveal where the goods are stashed.

Almost all mention of ‘Easter Eggs’ has hitherto been forbidden in order to allow fans in South America and Japan, who had to wait (and wait… and wait…) for a very late local release, to have time to find them for themselves.

Hopefully, seeing as it’s Easter, enough time has now passed for the surprise to be joyfully spoiled, but please let everyone have a part in the surprise-spoiling. No long lists, please. Nobody likes a know-it-all.

If goes without saying, but, if you still don’t wish to know where they are, don’t read the comments below.

And, if you celebrate it, Happy Easter.

Remember That Night DVD (2007)Today’s winners are Paul C (20) and Davie (72), who, respectively, win Best Buy and Borders copies of the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD. These were exclusive to the US and are Region 1, don’t forget, but they’re certainly nice items to add to the collection.

The Best Buy version comes with a three-track CD featuring ‘On An Island’, ‘Take A Breath’ and ‘High Hopes’ from the AOL sessions. The Borders version comes with a poster of David playing at Abbey Road.

Well done, both. Let me know where your prizes should be sent.

The next prize draw will be on Monday, when a copy of Phil Taylor’s fine book, ‘The Black Strat: A History Of David Gilmour’s Black Fender Stratocaster’, and some equally-fine (apparently, I don’t play) GHS strings for the guitar of your choice will be the prizes at stake.

If you don’t want to be considered for these, please say so.

Don’t forget, you can find out more about both Phil and his book at TheBlackStrat.com.

Just the one answer from Phil today, but it’s a lengthy one.

Your thoughts, as always, are most welcome.

Do you reckon it’s true that David himself is the secret to the Gilmour sound (i.e. he could pick up an 80 quid Strat copy and still sound like Gilmour, or is that just a sweeping statement used by people who find that they cannot get ‘the sound’?) (Emma)

Yes, no question, it is true. David’s choice of notes and sense of melody and timing, both the physical attack and subtleties with both hands in playing of the instrument and his setting of the equipment and control of it to work in conjunction with what he is playing. It is the combination of all this that is his sound. This said, the quality of the sound can be enhanced by using better sounding equipment. Think – does it sound like David if he is using a Telecaster, Les Paul, Gretsch Duo Jet or a Lap Steel instead of a Strat? We once did a TV show with Mark Knopfler – he used David’s Red Strat with David’s amp on David’s settings and who did he sound like? Mark Knopfler, of course. Like any great guitarist, so much of the sound is him. I have never heard anybody sound like David, because this is the real deal from the man who created it. You can only sound like yourself, perhaps trying to imitate somebody else. Like the mimicking professional parrots, such as in Roger Waters’ band or Pink Floyd cover bands, who try their best, but it does not sound like David. It is best summed up by an analogy: it is like a facsimile of an original piece of artwork.

Remember That Night DVD (2007)The all-important numbers for this draw were 32, 45, 46 and 59, meaning that our winners today are: Ulli (who wins a signed programme from the ‘Remember That Night’ premieres, plus an Odeon Leicester Square VIP pass), Paul Sexton, Robyn, and Joe from Canada (who each win a programme and a pass).

Congratulations to you. Please let me know where your prizes should be sent.

There’ll be another prize draw on Friday, with US-only exclusives of the ‘Remember That Night’ DVD up for grabs. If you don’t want to be considered for either a Best Buy, or Borders, disc (the former includes a three-track CD, the latter comes with a rather nice poster), please speak up.

Here’s some more from Phil Taylor.

I’d be interested to hear which three guitars you’d choose, by the way…

If you could hypnotize David into handing over three of his guitars to you, which would they be and why? (Buffalo Phil)

Why stop at three?

I just read on this site that David is a “Gooner”. Are you a “Gooner” also? (Barbara Phillips)

Man. United for ever.

In your opinion, which delivers the ‘true’ Floyd tone, the Pete Cornish P-2 or the newer G-2? (Randall Yeager)

Neither, David has almost never used Pete Cornish distortion pedals – a popular misconception. He has them in pedal boards, but only as alternates to his favourites, and as separate pedals. He has tried them (as he has many other makes: Rat, Boss HM2, etc.), but his choice is nearly always EH Big Muff, BK Butler Tube Driver, and, in the earlier days, a Fuzz Face or a Colorsound Overdriver.

The winners of these are Lynn (42) and Stephanie (57).

Well done, both. Please let me know where your prizes should be sent.

The chatroom will be open tomorrow from 3PM (UK time), should you wish to talk about scarves, or anything else.

Here’s a bit more from Phil Taylor…

Are the red Strats modified, besides the EMG and electronics? Perhaps a pre-CBS or Callaham bridge block? (Ernest Peske)

Not currently. They have had different parts: bridge saddles, string trees and springs at times.

It’s been said that Eric Clapton retired Blackie because the guitar became unplayable. With electric guitars, and particularly Strats, being so interchangeable (swapping necks, changing electronics, etc.), can a guitar like a Strat truly become unplayable, and, if so, how much more life do you estimate is left for David’s black Strat? (Andrew)

Parts can always be replaced on a Strat. See my book ‘The Black Strat’ for all of the changes to David’s.

I was wondering, was David’s black Strat used on ‘Live at Pompeii’, or could it possibly be the Strat that El Magnifico used on last year’s tour? (Amedeo)

No, see my book, ‘The Black Strat’, for more information.
