'David, and black Strat, at the Odeon (Leicester Square, London, September 2007)If you haven’t yet seen it, Fender’s microsite for the David Gilmour Stratocaster is now up, so have a butcher’s.

A break from the fine Piotr Tarasewicz GdaƄsk shots for today. This one’s another of Frank’s, from Leicester Square last year.

You too could be striking that very same pose with your own black Strat soon (ish). Probably not a good idea to try striking it in Leicester Square, though. You know what crowds are like.

Thanks again, Frank.

Just a reminder that there’s more from Later… with Jools Holland tomorrow night on BBC2, as well as an hour from the GdaƄsk gig and a 30-minute documentary (on BBC4).

That might interest a few more of you now that many poor souls are still waiting for their postie to deliver their five-disc bundle of joy. (You’ll have yours before Friday night, I’m sure.)

For those of you thinking of downloading the album from iTunes, now you’ll only get ‘Wot’s…’ if you’re in Europe. (Sorry!)

The word is that the new release date for Poland is Monday. Please take that with a pinch of salt, just in case. It does sound wildly optimistic, no offence to EMI Poland.

Saturday is still the all-important day for Australia, and Monday for France and the vinyl.

By the way, SoundStage Direct’s price for the LPs is now $98.99 (US).

David on stage in GdaƄsk, by Piotr Tarasewicz

With ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ released across much of Europe today, and a good chance that the postman will deliver a few copies over the weekend, here’s what you should know about the web pass.

You get one with the vinyl set and also if your version comes with a DVD.

It’s your ticket to bonus content. In the case of the vinyl, that means you can download the entire concert; with the DVD, 12 live tracks and, of course, ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’.

You get a new track on the first of every month, starting with ‘Wot’s…’, which you can download now.

Insert the concert DVD into your computer’s DVD drive, go to www.davidgilmour.com/bonus and follow the instructions. Be sure to click Yes (or Run) to run the validation software, then OK to validate your DVD.

No personal data is collected. A cookie is left on your machine, but it expires within the hour. Therefore, you will need to re-verify your DVD each month.

With the vinyl, your web pass is more unique number (or access code), which you need to redeem online. Again, go to www.davidgilmour.com/bonus and enter an e-mail address. For future visits (as there’s a lot to download), the number and address must match.

Instructions are in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. There’s also a multi-language FAQ, should you encounter any problems, as well as e-mail support.

The release date for Brazil, Israel and New Zealand is Monday 22 September.

David on stage in GdaƄsk, by Piotr Tarasewicz

‘Live in GdaƄsk’ is out in some parts of Europe tomorrow. Likely countries are Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland, but please check before you head out.

The release date for Australia has been pushed back to Saturday 27 September.

The vinyl set is now $99.99 from SoundStage Direct (with free domestic shipping).

Waterloo Records – of Austin, Texas – have prices of $17.97, $31.47 and $44.97. This includes the ‘Wot’s…’ CD while supplies last, although they promise to let you know before your order is processed if they do run out.

The Disc Exchange (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Euclid Records (St Louis, Missouri) ship worldwide, so contact them for a price.

‘A Great Day For Freedom’ has just been added to David’s MySpace.

Tickets are still available to see the GdaƄsk concert at the cinema. That’s on Monday night.

The DG Strat is still on schedule, but please don’t expect to get your hands on yours until at least October. The manufacturing process is a very slow one and demand has been great.

The ‘Flashback: Ritzy‘ post has re-opened, so, if you want to talk about that…

And finally, the chatroom will be open tomorrow, between 14:00 and 16:00 (UK).

The five-disc 'Live in GdaƄsk' set

It’s proving to be quite elusive in some parts of the world, this five-disc deluxe set.

As is hopefully now clear, Best Buy have an exclusive deal to sell this in the US. If you’re in the US and you want the five-disc, for simplicity’s sake, it has to be Best Buy.

The following countries (I omit Europe deliberately as I’m only covering Sony regions for now) have ordered the five-disc version for local retailers, so it should be possible to find it locally (that’s possible, not easy): Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand.

The vinyl should be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand.

If city stores show no signs of stocking it, please ask why. Someone, somewhere, should be able to order it for you.

If your country is not listed, then you will need to order it.

Anthill can deliver the five-disc set around the world – just not to the US.

Here’s one for Australia, with a nice breakdown of the package and its contents.

The guitar pick/plectrum, by the way, is the same size (354), shape and material (celluloid) as the ones that David uses. Tortoiseshell in colour with gold print, one side has ‘David Gilmour – Gdansk’, with Wireman on the reverse.

Anyway, if you know of a store or site anywhere that is taking pre-orders for the five-disc set, and can deliver to the music world’s oft-forgotten regions, please let us know.

Blog Poll: Will you be downloading 'Wot's...' using the DVD web pass? 77% vote 'Yes', 23% vote 'No'.

Word gets around, doesn’t it?

You can now hear ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ at David’s MySpace.

In less than an hour, it’s been played 113 times.

Remember that independent stores in the USA will be including a CD of ‘Wot’s…’ with pre-orders of all ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ sets except for the deluxe and vinyl versions.

If you download the album in full (by that, I mean the two live GdaƄsk CDs) from iTunes, they will include ‘Wot’s…’ free of charge. You cannot download it individually.

However, if you’ll soon have a DVD web pass, you will be able to download ‘Wot’s…’ by following the instructions provided. It will be the first download, the 12 live
tracks will follow.

You don’t get a DVD web pass with the two-disc or vinyl sets, although ‘Wot’s…’ is, of course, included on vinyl (and you can download all the concert tracks with the LP’s own web pass).

Do let us know if you’ll be downloading it using the DVD web pass, anyway.

David on stage in Florence, 2 August 2006

Well, here we are: August already, and suddenly ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ doesn’t seem quite so far away.

Anyway, we’re remembering the Florence concert today, which took place exactly two years ago (further proof, as if it were needed, that time is simply flying by).

If you were there, we’d love to hear from you.

What do you remember most? Which was your favourite moment, if you can choose one, and which songs stand out in your mind as being particularly memorable?

There was a pretty good version of ‘Coming Back To Life’, judging by its inclusion on the GdaƄsk album…

The bonus live tracks, you probably don’t need reminding, but just in case, are only available if you buy the three or four-disc version (in which case, you’re able to download them), or the five-disc ‘deluxe’ set (which includes all 12 on CD, with the further option to download them, if you so wish).

Please note that the standard double CD does not include any tour extras, just the full concert from GdaƄsk, and the vinyl only has ‘On The Turning Away’, from Venice.

A further breakdown of what’s included across the five sets, here.

Details on how to pre-order any of these, which is strongly recommended in the case of the vinyl version, will also follow in due course.

Please appreciate that things aren’t quite finished yet. There are still details that need to be finalised before your (very good) questions can be answered to your liking.

Blog Poll: Would you prefer to download 12 live tracks or get them on CD? 15% vote 'Download', 85% vote 'CD', 2% vote 'Don't know'.Thanks for your votes – and views – on your preferred choice of box set. The results were interesting, with 63% favouring the ‘deluxe’ over the vinyl – and 28% saying they’d get both.

I’d like to elaborate on this ‘web pass’ today.

You get a web pass with the three and four-disc sets. This comes in the form of a DVD (the same DVD with the GdaƄsk concert footage and documentary). Slap this DVD into your computer’s DVD drive while connected to the internet and, voilĂ : you’ll be able to download 12 live tracks from Vienne, Venice, Munich, Milan… The same live tracks that you get on CD with the ‘deluxe’ set.

So, it’s up to you to decide if you really need them on a CD, or if downloading them would be a better option. If downloading them suits you, and you don’t need the tour memorabilia, you might prefer to buy the (cheaper) three or four-disc set, as opposed to the five-disc equivalent.

However, you can only download one track per month (each month for 12 months, obviously).

Full instructions will appear on screen when the DVD is loaded. These will be in English only.

In the case of the vinyl, what you get is more ‘download card’ than web pass (there’s no DVD for starters). This will give you the option of ripping all the music that’s on vinyl to your hard drive. You can’t download the 12 live tracks, but ‘On The Turning Away’ (from Venice) is on the fifth LP.

The download will be to the first hard drive used (although, once you’ve entered the unique number for your download card, thus rendering it obsolete for use on another machine, you can rip the tracks to that hard drive as and when you require them).

I’d like to hear your thoughts on downloading music. Do you? Would you?

And believe me, I know that you’d like to be able to download ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’, so there’s really no need to tell me again.

Blog Poll: Vinyl Box Set or Deluxe Box Set? 6% vote 'Vinyl', 63% vote 'Deluxe', 28% vote 'Both' and 3% vote 'Neither'.Just when you thought you’d set your heart on the five-disc combination of CDs and DVDs, here’s what’s in the vinyl set.

Five LPs, four of which cover the entire concert from GdaƄsk, plus a 20-page booklet and web pass, so that you can also download the whole thing.

The fifth LP has a few live recordings from Venice and David’s appearance on the ‘Live from Abbey Road’ television programme (‘On The Turning Away’ from Venice, ‘The Blue’ and ‘Echoes’ from Abbey Road), plus two Barn jams.

It’s also the only package to feature ‘Wot’s…. Uh The Deal’, which is not included on the CD.

The running order of songs is exactly the same as the setlist you’ll already be familiar with (the same goes for the CD), so: ‘Speak To Me’, ‘Breathe’, ‘Time’, ‘Breathe (Reprise)’, ‘Castellorizon’, ‘On an Island’, ‘The Blue’, ‘Red Sky at Night’, ‘This Heaven’, ‘Then I Close My Eyes’, ‘Smile’, ‘Take a Breath’, ‘A Pocketful of Stones’, ‘Where We Start’, ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’, ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’, ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Fat Old Sun’, ‘High Hopes’, ‘Echoes’, ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘A Great Day For Freedom’ and ‘Comfortably Numb’.

Go on then, hit me. I know Wot’s coming.

No questions about prices or packaging, please. You’ll have those details as soon as I have them.

Facts about the concert and what it commemorated:

GdaƄsk was the final show of the ‘On an Island’ tour: 26 August 2006. It was also David’s first ever performance in Poland.

It marked the 26th anniversary of the founding of Solidarity, the inspirational trade union.

Solidarity was founded in the GdaƄsk shipyard in September 1980, after strikes the previous month by shipyard workers – the first successful strike behind the Iron Curtain.

David was invited to perform in GdaƄsk by Poland’s former President and Solidarity leader, Lech WaƂęsa, and the Mayor of GdaƄsk, PaweƂ Adamowicz.

GdaƄsk is the sixth-largest city in Poland, as well as the country’s maritime capital.

The Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Polish composer, Zbigniew Preisner.

Renowned Polish pianist, Leszek MoĆŒdĆŒer, also joined David and the band on-stage.

All of the songs from David’s ‘On an Island’ album featured orchestral accompaniment, as well as ‘A Great Day For Freedom’, ‘Comfortably Numb’ and ‘High Hopes’.

The arrangements on the Pink Floyd tracks are by the late Michael Kamen.

‘A Great Day For Freedom’, a song about the optimism which followed the collapse of the Berlin Wall (from Pink Floyd’s 1994 album, ‘The Division Bell’), was only performed once during the 2006 tour – in GdaƄsk.

Cranes supporting the GdaƄsk stageThank you for your comments about the bonus DVD earlier today. There were some good ones… and some other ones.

And yes, if you missed it, ‘A Great Day For Freedom’, ‘Comfortably Numb’ and ‘High Hopes’ are included on said DVD, in addition to the ‘On an Island’ album in its entirety, ‘Astronomy Domine’ and ‘Echoes’. (Come on, did you really think they’d be left out? That was a wind-up.)

There’s just so much to say today, I need a second post to be able to say it all.

I can tell you – and this is no wind-up, trust me – that there will be two, three, four and five-disc ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ packages available, containing various things. Obviously, the two-disc version is the album – on CD – and the three-disc version is the album – still on CD – with a bonus DVD, as mentioned previously (114 minutes of concert footage from GdaƄsk, plus a 36-minute documentary).

If you read the comments that followed the post before last (Live album on vinyl, 5 June), you may also have noted that the vinyl version contains a whopping five LPs. Really. Five.

There is another five-disc set in addition to the vinyl, by the way.

So, what about these mysterious four and five-disc sets? Wot’s…. Uh The Deal? Do you think the fourth disc is a CD or a DVD? What do you think is on it? What about the fifth disc? Could it be vinyl? Could it be Blu-ray? Could it be magic? And just how does a concert take up five LPs, anyway? Something’s been added to that, surely. Either that, or perhaps something’s missing from the CD. Hmm.

I’d like to know what you think will fill these discs and, separately, what you hope will fill them. These are two very different things, of course.

That said, in spite of some improbable cravings (be fair), we’re enjoying your excitement, so keep your feedback coming.

Lastly, a summary of what’s been announced so far is available here, if you want it straight.

David's forthcoming live album, 'Live in GdaƄsk'David’s ‘Live in GdaƄsk’ – still due to be released in September, you’ll be relieved to hear – will be available on big plastic discs, as well as a smaller, shinier ones.

So, it’s good news for those of you who were hoping that it would be released on vinyl (One wish for the live album, 14 May).

Stay tuned for more revelations, including more of your wishes coming true.

Care to guess which ones? Oh, go on.

I’ll let you know more tomorrow… but only if you guess.

You can also speculate in the chatroom, which will be open today between the hours of 16:00 and 18:00 (UK). Please be reminded that doors close on time, so do arrive before 18:00 to avoid missing out.

00013_blog.jpgAnother first for you…

Available for a limited period over the Christmas holidays – and dedicated to the memory of Syd Barrett, who passed away in July – will be an ‘Arnold Layne’ single featuring two live versions of the song: one with David Bowie on vocals, the other with Richard Wright (both from the Royal Albert Hall).

Poignantly, it will also include a live acoustic cover of ‘Dark Globe’, from Syd’s debut album, ‘The Madcap Laughs’.

There will be a limited press of 7″ singles in Europe and 10″ singles in North America.

These will be available in all good record shops (and probably some rubbish ones as well) from 26 December.

The tracks will also be available for download from Christmas Day.

I’ll give you more details a bit closer to the time.

There was no chat today, but the chatroom will be open from 3PM (UK time) tomorrow.

We’ve reached the end of Guy’s Q&A, but thank you all for your questions and comments. I’ll leave you with Guy’s answers to some of your sillier ones and wish our competition winners, Tony K and Martin S, a fabulous time at Guy’s stand-up show tonight.

Last, but certainly not least, the winner of David’s very own ‘On an Island’ T-shirt is… Susan.

Many congratulations, Susan. I hope you’ll like it and trust that it’s going to a good home.

David’s new UK single, available now, is ‘Smile’ – and this is the artwork.

You can download it from iTunes (including an exclusive demo version of the song). More download options coming soon.

If a boring old CD is good enough for you, then the two-track single includes the album version of ‘Smile’ as well as ‘Island Jam’. Please don’t pay any more than ÂŁ2 for the CD single. If it’s selling for more than this, ask why – and buy it somewhere else instead.

There is also a limited edition 7" single on clear vinyl. This is the same as the two-track CD, as it also includes the album version and ‘Island Jam’. One for the collectors, that.

BBC Radio 2 currently has ‘Smile’ on its ‘C’ List, which can be promoted to the ‘B’ List – meaning more airplay – if enough people request it. Let us know if you hear it, let them know that you want to hear it…

David’s XM Radio session is coming up very shortly (9am ET) on XM 76/Fine Tuning. If you don’t yet have your free three-day pass, sign up now and tune in. David and Phil Manzanera performed acoustic renditions of ‘Smile’ and ‘Where We Start’, as well as answering questions, so it’s not to be missed.

You can also hear this session over the weekend. Please see the previous blog entry for details.
